ESPN analyst is sure: “Guus Til will make his first minutes at a finals tournament”

1 min read

Guus Til, as is well known, is the only PSV player included in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for the World Cup. Last Wednesday, all uncertainty came to an end and it was announced that Til has been selected by Koeman for the World Cup in North America.

The decision to include Guus Til in the squad is generally understandable, according to many an analyst. Valentijn Driessen, on the other hand, was quite sceptical on Vandaag Inside about calling up Til, but according to ESPN analyst Hans Kraay Jr., it is completely justified that the PSV player has been selected by the national coach.

For Kraay, the spot for Til also didn’t come as a surprise. ''And if you’re talking about depth... Guus Til is going to make his first minutes at a final tournament'', says the analyst, speaking with ESPN with conviction.

The former footballer spoke outside the broadcasts of the program Goedemorgen Eredivisie from ESPN already with Koeman about Til. ''After those same broadcasts, he explained that he wants to see rockets for the transition when in the lead. In the heat, you therefore need runners. And whether it is 8, 18 or 38 degrees... Til goes and he does,'' says Kraay.

Besides Til, Kraay is of the opinion that selecting Crysencio Summerville (West Ham United) is also justified. ''I'm happy that you mention him, because the national team coach was very outspoken about it. In fact, he said that Summerville will play if Memphis Depay doesn't make it. Earlier in Goedemorgen Eredivisie, he was also very enthusiastic about him, due to his depth,'' the analyst said.

Rodonut? idk who they mean, but if that player is the plan to add solidity, fine. However, i want to see more direct balls in behind, not just possession rotations. 🔥

I agree with the point about the fullbacks, their timing in the overlap looked key. But I think the article underplays how important the striker movement is to free up those lanes. When the nine drops early, it makes the whole plan work much cleaner 👀⚽

"PSV Inside" keeps talking about intensity, but i still see moments of indecision in build-up. Against teams that press like Ajax, this can get exposed fast, no cap. Still, if X factor is the first-time pass, then we have a real chance 🚀💯

"PSV Inside" needs more talk about the CB duo positioning. They look calm on the ball but sometimes they get dragged out and leave the channel open. Fix that, and this team goes from solid to scary. 💯⚽

"controlled chaos" is great until it turns into 1-2 big chances conceded... Tbh the defensive shape has to be perfect for this style. ⚽🤬

That quote about "tempo through the middle" sounds nice, but PSV need the third man runs. Otherwise it turns into sideways passes and then a hopeful cross. 💀

Im not convinced about the fullback push when the midfield is this stretched. If the winger tucks inside, PSV's backline gets exposed, and we will see it fast. goated attacking though.

Tbh i just want to see them be more brave with the last pass. If it is just sideways and then back, opponents sit deeper and it turns into a grind. Bring the forward runs earlier, that would make Gakpo and Noni FEEL the ball more. 👀🔥

The article calling it "controlled chaos" is honestly spot on. Sangare breaking up play and then recycling it quickly is exactly why PSV look dangerous. 👀

If PSV really go for that high press from minute one, they will either win the ball in waves or get punished by the first counter. tbh Gakpo on the half-turn is the difference maker, but only if he gets runners around him.

I like the way PSV press high, but if they leave space behind the fullbacks again, it will be dangerous. The article is right though, this midfield control is what makes the patterns click. Still, 1 lapse and you pay, especially against better transitions.

If PSV really want to press higher like the article suggests, they need better cover for the left half-space. The moment that midfield gets bypassed, its straight transition football for opponents. Feels like Til needs to be more disciplined off the ball or we pay for it.
