Analyst Ziggo Sport sure about Koeman: “He always thinks back on that”

Last Wednesday, head coach Ronald Koeman announced his World Cup squad, and as everyone knows, Guus Til is the only PSV player who has received an invitation from the head coach. Captain Jerdy Schouten has to miss the World Cup due to a serious cruciate ligament injury, and midfielder Joey Veerman has indicated that he no longer needs to be called up by Koeman.

Former internationals Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder also have a few question marks about the World Cup squad. For instance, Sneijder doesn’t understand that Koeman has called up Ajax player Wout Weghorst.

''I can’t understand how you can have a season like that and still be rewarded with a spot in the World Cup squad. Who you would then have to take, I don’t know, because it’s also not the case that we all have top strikers. I find that strange, but I also didn’t understand the explanation. Why do you need a player like that? To score a little goal against Argentina? Any other player in that position would have scored that too'', says the record international in the podcast Wes & Raf of Ziggo Sport.

After that, Van der Vaart goes on about it, and the former midfielder also points to Veerman, who during the Euro 2024 in Germany was last to see action and was never selected again afterwards. ''Koeman does hold onto moments like that; he will think about it. The same with Veerman—Koeman only holds onto Austria. He keeps thinking about it and remembering it. You really never get past it. He is very much like that,'' Van der Vaart said.

There was also a great deal of discussion in the Netherlands about the fact that former PSV player Memphis Depay, despite his shaky fitness, was still selected. Van der Vaart, however, can still go along with the fact that Memphis has been called up.

''In our time, Memphis was never called on at this moment, but we don't have any strikers, so I also think it's logical that you keep him around. I still think he's a great striker, but in our time, that would never have happened'', the analyst concludes.
