More and more Orange fans want a PSV player instead of the “apathetic and uninterested” Ajax man
1 min readThe hour of truth is approaching for Ronald Koeman and his staff in relation to the announcement of the full squad of the Netherlands national football team for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. These are also exciting days for Guus Til.
Til appears to be close to a place in the selection for the global finals. A striking detail is that more and more football fans are opting for Til’s team instead of, for example, Wout Weghorst, who is having a mediocre season with Ajax. As a result, Weghorst is being called “lazy and apathetic” on social media, but people have found the striker from Twente in recent weeks and months to come across as primarily uninterested.
ESPN analysts Sjoerd Mossou and Anco Jansen also voiced plenty of criticism about Weghorst’s play. The pair wonder whether Ronald Koeman should really take a player of this caliber to the World Cup. Jansen was shocked by one specific moment.
Ajax played a fine match on Thursday evening at the KRAS Stadium against FC Groningen (2-0 victory), but Weghorst was the weakest on the side of the Amsterdam team. "He was indeed the major discord in Ajax’s play", judges Algemeen Dagblad journalist Mossou on the ESPN program Voetbalpraat. "Not only because of the chances he misses, but because he simply reaches a mediocre level."

This moderate level is not the first time Weghorst has fallen short this season. Nevertheless, he is presumably expected to be at the World Cup with the Netherlands national team in a few weeks. Mossou believes that doubts may well be raised about that: "He’s a pinch-hitter and has to make a difference in the last ten minutes. But you may, in principle, expect a certain minimum level from a player of the Netherlands national team who is going to a World Cup", the journalist says. "If you’ve watched Weghorst this season, then it’s also pretty bleak that he’s still getting included."
Mossou knows that Weghorst has proven himself in the past as a pinch-hitter for Oranje, but the journalist has doubts all around: "He’s done brilliantly in that role, for example in Qatar, but for a striker of the Netherlands national team it’s still rather thin."
Anco Jansen agrees with Mossou, as he says on Voetbalpraat. "If as a striker for Ajax and the Netherlands national team you don’t manage to get something off at least a shot in your actions, that was really bizarre to see. It looked unbelievably bad."

Im not sold on the wing rotations. One match is fine, but if the fullbacks keep drifting inside, opponents will just overload the wide areas. tbh we need clearer roles for the wide guys, not vibes.
That lineup is giving me vibes of a controlled 2-1, but only if Tillman and Sangare dont get isolated. Also, please keep the fullbacks disciplined, no panic steps. 🙄
Wow, that quote about "quick transitions" better be true, because when we are slow from the back its always a free counter. Come on, lets see that intensity from kick-off, 🔥⚽
Lol i get why PSV fans are confident, but if your plan is to dominate the ball, you better punish their counters. Otherwise it turns into the same old watch-the-race drama 😂🤡
I want Luuk de Jong near the box more, not drifting into midfield like a passenger. Put him on the shoulder and play the early cutback, thats the play. W
"still missing that final pass" is accurate, tbh. We create nice moments but the last ball is either too heavy or too late. Against stronger teams that costs you fast. 🔥
"brave in possession" ok but can we be brave without leaving ourselves exposed? I just want a bit more structure when the game gets messy, ngl 😅
Bro how is Cody Gakpo still the one carrying the build-up. If he is double-marked, we need someone else to drop and receive, not just recycle sideways. 💀
The article mentions adjustments after conceding early, and i think that is where PSV wins. Still, the defence needs to be quicker to the second ball, it felt like we were always half a step late.
If PSV really played with that higher line in the article, then Sangare has to stay disciplined or it will get punished fast. The midfield spacing looked a bit messy at times, ngl.
GOATED performance incoming? If the front three were that sharp, we should be rinsing teams with quick cutbacks all day 🔥⚽
That quote about being "brave in possession" is nice, but bruh we cant keep coughing it up in the half-spaces. If the winger doesnt track back, the fullback is gonna be on toast again.
If PSV really went with that midfield shape, you can see how it helps the build-up, but it also leaves space behind when the press gets bypassed. tbh i love the intent, just dont see how we control transitions fully.
If this is about PSV switching to a higher press, i just hope it doesnt leave space behind Veerman again. Lets see if the midfield actually holds shape this time. 👀
