Guus Til reveals bizarre statement by referee Van der Eijk and Eagles player: 'Nonsense, suspend immediately'

1 min read

A downright bizarre chain of circumstances at De Adelaarshorst, where home side Go Ahead Eagles saw PSV easily prevail. Without too much effort, but with consistently good football, Peter Bosz's team quickly pulled away to 1-4.

However, this did not happen without incident, because referee Sander van der Eijk decided to referee his own match. It turned out to be bizarre that his decision was not to award a penalty to the team of Peter Bosz, but his explanation towards Guus Til was nevertheless everything.

Already in the opening phase, Guus Til was brought down in the box after Kramer caught Til's ankle with his studs. The VAR called referee Martin van den Kerkhoff over to the screen, but surprisingly enough he decided not to award a penalty. On social media, a lot of outcry erupted immediately over the decision. However, after a very minimal foul by Kiliann Sildillia on Oliver Breum, Van den Kerkhoff on the other hand pointed decisively to the spot.

What followed was in fact a pair of very remarkable statements from both referee Sander van der Eijk and from some players of the home club. “You’re already champions—why are you doing this? If I keep standing still, I can also take the ball,” Guus Til said about a player of The Eagles who was walking toward Til. It then got even crazier because Til revealed what Van der Eijk said. “A referee who follows the handbook would give a penalty here, but I’m feeling the match,” Til said about Van der Eijk’s remark, after which his laughter couldn’t be contained.

We can of course imagine all that, because this kind of decisions and statements do not belong on a football pitch. Van der Eijk also receives a lot of criticism on social media. 'Nonsense, suspend this referee immediately,' suggests a PSV fan on X. 'What a level this man, how do you come up with saying this?', says another critical PSV fan.
