“Sometimes I wonder how it would have turned out if I had gone to PSV.”
1 min readAfter his standout performance in the Eurojackpot KNVB Cup final on behalf of AZ, Sven Mijnans was once again linked with a transfer to PSV. The midfielder from Alkmaar appeared, last year as well, to be about to make the move to PSV like Ruben van Bommel did, but the club’s management in Alkmaar put a stop to it.
PSV wanted very badly to take over Mijnans last year, but despite that AZ held firm and decided to keep Mijnans on board. In an interview with the magazine Voetbal International, the midfielder from Alkmaar Zaanstreek looks back on that transfer period.
''I had never experienced something like that before. My transfer from Sparta to AZ went incredibly smoothly, two and a half years earlier. For me, it was the perfect step at that time. In a similar way, PSV last year seemed to me the perfect next step'', Mijnans tells VI.
Partly due to a lot of injury trouble affecting captain Jordy Clasie, Mijnans this season frequently played wearing the captain's armband and, as a result, the midfielder, according to his own account, took on a different role within the team. ''Someone who was training talents. That meant I had less time to take the steps I still wanted to take myself. At the same time, I saw good opportunities to play a lot at PSV. Also with an eye on the World Cup, it seemed like a good moment. No matter how you turn it or look at it, a national team coach looks more at PSV than at AZ. Sometimes I wonder how it would have turned out if I had gone to PSV after all,' Mijnans said.
For the midfielder, it was therefore also unexpectedly that the transfer to PSV did not go through. “A few months before that transfer window started, AZ indicated that it wanted to think along about whether it would be a good time for a transfer. But in the final phase of that season, I played well and my output increased significantly. After that, the club management’s stance changed,” concludes the 26-year-old Mijnans.

Brutale eerlijkheid van Mijnans. Maar tbh die "perfecte vervolgstap" klinkt alsof PSV echt de juiste stap was, alleen AZ deed niet mee. Als hij nu met de aanvoerdersband speelt door blessureleed, dan had dat traject in Eindhoven ook lekker doorgetrokken kunnen worden.
"Soms vraag ik me af hoe het was gelopen als ik wél naar PSV was gegaan" pff, dan denk ik direct aan hoe hij als 6 of 8 zou passen. Met die aanvoerdersband en die andere rol lijkt het alsof hij zelf niet helemaal zijn vrijheid kreeg. Als PSV hem had genomen, had hij misschien meer eigen acties kunnen afmaken, niet alleen mee "opvoeden".
Ik snap zijn punt over die rol met de aanvoerdersband, als je steeds "iemand die talenten aan het opleiden" wordt, dan ga je vanzelf minder aan jezelf trekken. Maar het doet me ook denken: PSV ziet toch vooral wat het nodig heeft op het EK/WK moment, dus waarom maakte hij het niet sneller waar?
Ik krijg vooral vibe dat AZ de houding omdraaide toen zijn rendement omhoog schoot. Dat is echt zo'n classic club die eerst meedenkt en later de prijs inzet. Als ik PSV was, vraag ik me dan af of ze hem puur als optie zagen of als plan A. 😂
Mijnt op zijn plek, maar tbh als je AZ hoort praten over "meedenken", dan voelt het alsof ze pas later doorhadden dat ze hem niet konden laten gaan. 👀 Zou PSV met hem echt beter worden op dat middenveld, of was dat vooral behoefte door de blessures van Clasie?
Blessureleed van Clasie en dan juist de band bij Mijnans, dat zegt genoeg over zijn waarde. Maar ik vraag me af of PSV hem toen écht als 'talent ontwikkelen' zou willen, of gewoon als directe motor. 👀
ngl begrijp ik zijn gevoel wel. Als je bij PSV zo'n rol kan krijgen met het WK in je hoofd, dan snap je dat "perfecte vervolgstap"-idee.
Tbh snap ik die twijfel wel. Als je bij AZ plots meer een "opleiding" rol krijgt, dan wil je gewoon stappen maken. Maar PSV had ook z'n redenen, want met blessureleed bij Clasie was het idee logisch om middelen te pakken. Toch zonde dat het net niet rondkwam, want Mijnans kan tempo- en balcontrole brengen.
