Wim Kieft praises PSV player: ‘He just does it’

1 min read

This season, despite his 37-year age, Ivan Perisic was a very important part of PSV. The versatile winger is especially praised for his fitness and attitude.

Perisic this season across all competitions delivered ten goals and sixteen assists. This also earns the former PSV striker Wim Kieft the necessary compliments for the Croatian.

Kieft is a big fan of the experienced Croatian international, who is preparing with his country to make a bid for their fourth World Cup, and sees in him a greater added value than Joey Veerman. ''I find Perisic much more valuable'', says the analyst in the podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp.

Almost two years ago, Perisic arrived at PSV on a free transfer and at first there were many doubts among many analysts about the added value of the Croat for PSV. This was the view of Johan Derksen and René van der Gijp as well, who believed that PSV wouldn’t get anything from Perisic, but Derksen has since changed his mind.

The experience that Perisic has gained in foreign competitions such as the Premier League, the Bundesliga and Serie A, according to Kieft, plays a major role in the fact that some teammates look up to the Croatian. ''In the group stage and as an example. He dares to just swear at everyone, even in places where you think: 'don't make such a fuss.' He just does it'', concludes the Amsterdam-born man.

This is exactly why we win and also exactly why we panic. Too many touches before the pass, then suddenly we're chasing the game again. Need more tempo, asap. 🔥

"PSV's gameplan is built on speed" ok but speed without accuracy is just running for nothing. Need more end product in the box, especially from the wide areas. Otherwise it becomes cross and pray, not a system.

"Inside" stuff is interesting, but tbh i want to see more direct play between the lines. When the wingers slow it down, the whole attack becomes predictable. 👀

If PSV really want to press higher, i hope that midfield triangle is drilled because otherwise Dortmund-style counters will hurt us. Sangare needs to be brave on the ball, not just cover space.

That quote about pressing higher is exactly what i love to hear, but can they sustain it for 90? If Sangare and Veerman are on the same page, then its gonna be fire 🔥. If not, we get mid-block with no punch.

"PSV have been more direct" ok but direct has to mean winners, not just hopeful balls. The moment Saibari is open between the lines it looks like we can cook, but we need the runner to commit faster in the final third. Otherwise it turns into a lot of possession with no punch 😅

I get the idea, but our build-up still looks a bit shaky when the fullback is pinned. Brobbey dropping in should help, yet we need better support from the 8 so it doesnt get crowded. 💀

Tbh the most interesting bit for me is the pressing trigger. If we win the ball higher with the front two, we can punish them immediately instead of waiting for the second phase. 👀

"Inside" is nice, but imo we have to be consistent with the runner behind the line. When it comes late, it just turns into sideways passing and thats mid.🙄

If PSV really wants to control games, that midfield balance has to be nailed. The article hints at it, but i still dont see enough defensive cover when the fullbacks jump forward. Thats where it can get exposed in big matches.

Those inside patterns you mentioned are exactly what we need against compact blocks. If Tillman actually gets the half-space to receive facing goal, thats an easy advantage for PSV. 🔥⚽

If PSV wants more control, i still think the midfield pivot has to be steadier. Right now it feels like we get baited into running at defenders instead of playing through them. That leaves space behind the fullbacks, not ideal tbh.
