1 min readSince Switzerland’s return to the World Cup 2006, the Alpine country has been in the running at every World Cup since then. In 2006, Switzerland set a record by being eliminated without conceding a goal.
Johann Vogel, who left PSV in the summer of 2005 for AC Milan, was at the time the captain of the Swiss national team that had qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1994 after they settled matters with Turkey in the play-offs on the basis of away goals. La Nati Rossocrociati played at the World Cup in Germany in Group G against France, Togo, and South Korea, coached by former PSV coach Dick Advocaat.
The first group match against France, against whom the Swiss had also played in the qualifying round, ended in a 0-0 draw, and in the second match against Togo the team coached by head coach Jakob 'Köbi' Kuhn won 2-0. As a result, the Swiss, with four points from two matches, were temporarily at the top alongside South Korea, and both countries faced each other in the final group match.
Ultimately Switzerland won 2-0 in Hannover and thereby the Swiss finished first in Group G. South Korea was eliminated due to this defeat and France's victory over Togo (0-2), while the Koreans in 2002 still managed to reach the semi-finals under Guus Hiddink.
In the round of 16, Switzerland faced World Cup debutants Ukraine. Both teams still couldn’t find the back of the net after 90 minutes, so extra time was needed in Cologne.
Even in extra time, no one scored, so the decision had to come from the penalty spot, and in that the Ukrainians were the better side. Ukraine won 0-3 on penalties, and that meant the tournament was over for the Swiss.
Still, Alpenland set a record by leaving the World Cup without conceding a goal. Switzerland’s next conceded goal would only come during the 2010 World Cup, in the second group match against Chile (1-0) in the 75th minute, and the Swiss thereby also set a record by going 558 minutes without conceding a goal at the World Cup.

Idk hoe je dit vergelijkt met PSV, maar dit smaakt naar een team dat collectief niks weg durfde te geven. 🙄 Frankrijk 0-0, Oekraïne 0-0... pas in 2010 weer tegen. Knap, maar ook een beetje frustrerend dat het dan niet doorpakt.
"558 minuten geen goal te incasseren op het Wereldkampioenschap" ... goated verdediging fr. Ik wil bijna zeggen dat Vogel daar de mentaliteit neerzette. 🔥 Maar Oekraïne was tbh gewoon koeler vanaf elf meter.
Brutale statistiek, 2010 pas 1-0 in minuut 75. tbh dan snap je waarom Dick Advocaat met Zuid-Korea zo weinig kon doorpakken. Bij PSV zouden we zeggen: iedereen werkte, maar aan het einde mistte de klap.
"uitgeschakeld zonder een doelpunt tegen te krijgen"... daar zit zoveel kwaliteit achter. Oekraïne won 0-3 met penaltys, dus je kan zeggen dat het lot soms ook gewoon pech is. Maar verdedigend stonden ze echt bovenaan.
Wist niet dat het volgende tegendoelpunt pas in 75e minuut tegen Chili viel. 😂 Dat is echt "muur"-niveau. Wel zuur dat het WK in de achtste finales meteen klaar was, maar die recordreeks is PSV-waardig.
Tbh die strafschoppen verliezen terwijl je nog clean kan blijven is wrang, maar tikt wel aan dat Zwitserland zijn kansen niet kon afmaken. 0-0, 2-0, 2-0 in de poule is netjes, maar tegen Oekraïne had ik meer vuur gezien. Voelt als net niet, maar wel peak organisatie.
Die 558 minuten zonder tegendoelpunt is echt goated. Ik zie nog steeds die spanning, vooral als Oekraïne dan in de strafschoppen besliste, maar de basis blijft perfect. PSV al vertrokken en toch zo'n effect.
Johann Vogel als aanvoerder en dan dit soort discipline... gewoon top. 0-0 tegen Frankrijk, 2-0 tegen Togo, en daarna zelfs heel de zomer geen tegendoelpunten. In PSV termen: dat is bijna onrealistisch strak verdedigen.
Die 558 minuten zonder tegendoelpunt in Duitsland 2006 is echt een banger. 👏 Alleen jammer dat ze in de 1/8 finale alsnog meteen kantelen na 0-0... strafschoppen voelt altijd als loterij.
0-0 tegen Frankrijk en daarna 2-0 tegen Togo, dat is lekker controlerend. Maar eerlijk, die shootout vs Oekraïne 0-3 is dan wel pijnlijk, daar had Zwitserland toch iets meer geluk verdiend.
Johann Vogel als aanvoerder bij Zwitserland en dan ook nog 558 minuten clean sheets... dat is echt topniveau. 😂 Wat een verdediging, bijna alsof ze toen al hetzelfde systeem als PSV hadden.
