These former PSV players competed for Ecuador and Ivory Coast at the World Cup
1 min readOn the night of Sunday 14 to Monday 15 June, Ecuador and Ivory Coast will play each other in the group of Curaçao under the management of Dick Advocaat and Armando Obispo. For both countries, at least one former PSV player has played at a World Cup at some point.
By name Ecuador, it was none other than Edison Mendez who represented his country as a former PSV player at three different World Cups. Mendez played for PSV from 2006 to 2009 and represented Ecuador at the 2002 World Cup, the 2006 World Cup, and the 2014 World Cup.
At the 2002 World Cup in Japan & South Korea, Mendez was responsible for the winning goal against Croatia (1-0), and this was Ecuador's first-ever World Cup victory. Nevertheless, Ecuador were eliminated in the group stage due to defeats against Italy (2-0) and Mexico (2-1).
The 2006 World Cup in Germany went better for Mendez & co. Ecuador managed to qualify for the next round together with Germany at the expense of Poland and Costa Rica, where England ultimately proved too strong with a 1-0 win.
For the 2010 World Cup, Ecuador failed to qualify, but in 2014 in Brazil, the country was represented again. There, the team with Mendez in the squad finished third in the group with four points from three matches, behind France and Switzerland, and as a result, the South American country was eliminated in the group stage.
Ibrahim Sangaré becomes the second former ex-PSV player from Ivory Coast who will represent his country at the World Cup of football. Arouna Koné, who was a player for PSV from 2005 to 2007, had in 2006 the honor of representing his country during Ivory Coast's debut at the World Cup.
Ivory Coast was eliminated in the group stage after defeats against Argentina (2-1) and the Netherlands (2-1). The last group match against (then still) Serbia and Montenegro was won by Ivory Coast 3-2 despite trailing 0-2.

Die serie van Mendez bij Ecuador op meerdere WK's is indrukwekkend, maar ik snap ook de frustratie: 2002 winst, 2006 door, 2014 weer eruit. Wel gaaf dat PSV zo lang doorwerkt richting WK-landen, niet alleen 1 generatie. 𓃵
"Curaçao van Dick Advocaat en Armando Obispo" lmao wat een context zeg. Maar ok, Arouna Koné als PSV'er die Ivoorkust op WK debuteert, dat wil ik PSV fans ook niet laten vergeten. 2006 was al zo'n momentje. ⚽
Interessant detail dat Mendez in 2002 Ecuador hun eerste WK-overwinning bezorgde tegen Kroatië, dat is toch echt top. Maar dan beide keren erna meteen eraf, dat laat zien hoe klein je marge is op toernooien. Ook 2014, pfff net derde en klaar. 💀
"Ecuador... uitgeschakeld in de poulefase" blijft toch een terugkerend thema, zelfs met 4 punten in 2014. In zo'n poule moet je toch hopen op wat meer doelsaldo, want Frankrijk en Zwitserland waren net beter. 🙄
Ivoorkust uitgeschakeld maar wel met die 3-2 comeback tegen Servië-Montenegro na 0-2 achterstand, daar zit tenminste karakter in. Best unfair dat ze dan alsnog met lege handen stonden vs Argentinië en Nederland. 💯
Sangaré voor Ivoorkust op een WK, daar gaat mijn hart wel een beetje harder van kloppen. Tbh Ivoorkust ging nog steeds kansloos tegen Argentinië en Nederland, maar die comeback tegen Servië-Montenegro was wel lekker. 👀
Arouna Koné bij PSV zag ik als jonge speler, en dan meteen WK-debuut met Ivoorkust in 2006, dat is wel peak. Ibrahim Sangaré erbij nu ook, nice link met PSV. 🔥
Wat ik frappant vind: Ecuador pakte in 2002 hun eerste WK-overwinning ooit en daarna toch meteen eruit. 2-0 tegen Italië en 2-1 tegen Mexico, dat soort poules voelt altijd alsof je net te kort komt.
Edison Mendez is echt zo'n naam die je ineens weer bij de PSV-cultuur terugzet. Winnende treffer tegen Kroatië in 2002 en dan toch gedoemd in die poule, pijnlijk maar wel historisch. 🔥
Edison Mendez echt een moie naam, maar tbh jammer dat Ecuador telkens weer vroeg naar huis moest. WK 2002 die goal tegen Kroatie was wel pure banger. 👀⚽
