Support from a former top striker: “He is always in the right position.”
1 min readDonyell Malen had an excellent second half of the season in which the former PSV striker, on loan, managed to score fourteen goals in eighteen league matches for AS Roma. As a result, Malen finished in the top four of Serie A and the Romans will therefore play in the Champions League next season.
In the past two friendly internationals, Oranje started with Malen as a striker and, despite a plethora of chances, Malen failed to find the net against Algeria (0-1) and Uzbekistan (2-1). This was also noticed by former top striker, among others for FC Bayern Munich, Roy Makaay.
''He should have scored in both matches. Against Algeria, maybe even twice'', said the former striker. Makaay himself played 43 internationals for the Netherlands national team in which the former striker managed to score only six times.
According to the born Wijchen native, Malen does not need to worry despite this. ''He just has to do nothing other than what he normally does. We are talking about two and not ten matches in which he has not scored'', continues Makaay.
According to the former striker, Malen is doing his job positionally well. ''He is always in the right position, but where at Roma they come at you from all angles and corners, that’s not quite the case now,'' Makaay says.
In addition, the former international believes that more pressure is on Malen given Memphis Depay's shaky fitness. ''The pressure is of course different. There’s a World Cup coming up and he has to keep Memphis on the bench. As a result, all eyes are of course on him,'' concludes Makaay.

Malen moet gewoon zijn ding doen, maar ik vond dat hij tegen Algerije echt te slap afwerkte. Wel logisch dat hij geen tien wedstrijden achter elkaar droog valt, maar ik hoop dat hij dit WK-moment pakt. 👀
"Hij staat steeds op de goede positie" klopt gewoon, dat zag je ook bij PSV. Maar als je dan niet scoort, blijft iedereen wel mentaal twijfelen... Zeker als Depay niet fit is. 🤡
Tbh die quote over
Malen in de top-4 met Roma en daarna twee keer Oranje starten en geen goal, ik snap de paniek niet zo. Makaay zegt het al, hij staat goed gepositioneerd en dat is meestal het verschil met kansen afmaken.
Roy Makaay z'n punt is wel herkenbaar: positioneel klopt het, maar het moment van afmaken ontbreekt net. 2 wedstrijden, idd niet 10, maar tegen Algerije en Oezbekistan had hij gewoon moeten scoren. Hopelijk pakt hij dat snel op.
Donyell Malen blijft gewoon een spits die telkens in de juiste zone staat. Als hij bij Roma net wat vaker raak schiet, zit je zo in een andere statistiek en dan komt die Champions League ook echt door.
