Still, a large outgoing transfer is realistic: “He is the director in midfield.”
1 min readSpending a lifetime at PSV seems like it could work for him, although he does have ambitions. Mauro Júnior has been associated with PSV for 10 years, but he actually isn’t thinking about leaving for a long time yet. Still, an outgoing transfer this summer could be a realistic scenario to call it.
Mauro Júnior came to PSV in the summer of 2017, having completed several training stints in Eindhoven in previous years. He joined from Desportivo Brasil from Brazil. In the 2019-2020 season he was still loaned out to Heracles Almelo, but over the years he gradually grew into a valued force at PSV. In the meantime, the tally for the left-footed player stands at 138 Eredivisie matches, and no more will be added this season because the Brazilian is injured.
"Mauro is the midfielder, he is so important this season. He was so great at a certain point", Sneijder said last week in praise. Hiddink also has good things to say about the versatile Brazilian, who, according to Varssevelder, can become even better.
"Mauro can get even better. He’s great. He’s so important. It’s a shame that he can play in multiple positions, because I would really like to see him in midfield."

138 Eredivisie appearances for a left-footed guy who arrived in 2017 is crazy. Also, that Heracles loan shows he was not just thrown in and forgotten. I would be nervous about losing him though.
Realistically, he can be an outgoing million transfer one day, but I hope PSV keeps him. If he truly is the midfield boss, selling him would be risky unless the replacement is exactly right.
The problem is the same old one, he is useful everywhere. I get Hiddink's point, but if he keeps bouncing between roles, can PSV really get the same level at one position to justify a million move?
I like Mauro a lot, but
That quote about him being important this season hits home. When Mauro links play, PSV looks calmer. Also, 2017 to now, that is proper progression, not a one-season hype.
Hearing Sneijder say Mauro is the midfield regisseur feels about right. He controls the tempo and still brings that energy out wide. If PSV can keep him fit, this kind of transfer talk actually makes sense.
The best thing is his value both in midfield and as a wing-back option. If Hiddink thinks he could be even better in the center, then that's basically a sign we should build around him.
I get the praise, but the "can still be better" part feels spot on. Sometimes he disappears for 10 minutes, and then you remember he can play multiple roles which also makes him less consistent.
Love how Sneijder calls him "the regisseur". Mauro Junior really does control tempo when PSV is under pressure, and it shows in those 138 Eredivisie games.
