Koeman: “He accepts his role with Orange, but I don’t know for how long.”

Ronald Koeman was satisfied with Memphis Depay's cameo appearance after the convincing victory over Sweden. The forward came on in the second half for Brian Brobbey, who provided an important contribution to Oranje's 5-1 win with two goals.

For the camera of NOS, Koeman spoke about the current situation of Memphis, who at this World Cup for now has to make do with a role as a substitute.

"I found it better today. Fitness is improving and then maybe there will be a moment when you can start with Memphis", said the head coach. According to Koeman, despite his reserve role, the experienced forward is still of great value to the squad. "From his role he is absolutely crucial and positive towards the other players. Memphis accepts his role now."

Koeman couldn’t help it and added a remark with a smile. "I don’t know for how long, but he does that. It’s also nice to see, because ultimately it’s about the entire group."

Base spot is calling

The national coach admitted that it was not an easy decision to keep Memphis temporarily out of the starting lineup. "That isn't easy for me, because I have always had a good relationship with him. It was about fitness, and that still wasn't one hundred percent."

Still, Koeman sees the striker getting closer and closer to his desired level. "He is getting closer and closer, and that is also due to how the team is functioning", he said.

Meanwhile, Brobbey is not making it easy for the national team coach. The striker seized his chance against Sweden by scoring twice. When asked whether he can still take Brobbey out of the starting lineup, Koeman replied: "He has some mild hamstring complaints, so that’s a bit of a letdown."

Besides Brobbey, Cody Gakpo was also on target twice against Sweden. Crysencio Summerville, who came on from the break, set the final score at 5-1.

Nice tactical angle from PSV Inside, but i think the fullback height is risky. Once we push up, the space behind the FB gets exposed fast, especially against teams that play direct. Need smarter cover from the 6, otherwise it turns into chaos quickly 👀

"controlled tempo" is nice, but PSV need intensity in the final third. If we slow it down too much, we end up recycling and the wingbacks dont get enough support. That is how you get punished.

Bruno Martins not starting? tbh i feel like he always gives that extra calm in the press. Without him, transitions get a bit chaotic, especially when the opponent counters fast 🔥

If PSV go back to a double pivot again, i swear it always invites pressure in midfield. The build-up has to be cleaner, or teams will just trap Veerman and force us wide. Still, with the right movement in half-spaces it can get dangerous 🔥

If PSV are really planning to play through the half-spaces more this season, then this midfield build-up has to be sharper. Right now it sometimes looks like we pass sideways and hope for magic, not the actual plan.
