Journalist was followed because of PSV scarf: 'I was really shocked'
1 min readFardau Wagenaar works as a journalist for the regional newspaper Tubantia, where she is sports editor. In her young years, Wagenaar was a devoted supporter of PSV, and about that the journalist tells an anecdote in the podcast De Ballen Verstand, which she co-produces with FC Twente watcher Leon ten Voorde.
Wagenaar says that in her childhood it was still the most normal thing in the world to choose a club from the traditional top three. This had to do with the fact that FC Twente was not yet so popular and well-known in the Achterhoek.
As a result, the journalist became a fan of PSV and went to see a PSV away match once in the old stadium of the Twente people. "I was also once in Diekman. I was in the PSV section, in the away end. But back then I was completely naïve and FC Twente was not yet so well known in the Achterhoek. You just became a fan of one of the three clubs (Ajax, Feyenoord or PSV, ed.). By far the easiest route'', Wagenaar looks back.
''I was quite naïve and had a scarf around me of PSV and I walked in the Zuidmolen. Then I was chased on the escalator and they said 'nasty dirty PSV-bitch'. I was completely startled and didn’t think it was about me. I was really twelve or thirteen. I looked at my scarf and thought: this is about me. I had a scarf and some badges. Then I went home and took everything off and never wore it again. I was really shocked,'' the journalist continues.

Later, Wagenaar eventually became a supporter of FC Twente, and the won KNVB Cup final against PSV on penalties in 2001 played a major role in that. ''Years later, during the cup match in 2001 between PSV and FC Twente (Amstel Cup final, editor.) something changed forever in my life,'' said the sports editor of Tubantia.
