International media point to former PSV player: 'And now this'

1 min read

It will most likely have escaped nobody that the Curaçao of Dick Advocaat and PSV defender Armando Obispo managed a historic feat last weekend by playing to a 0-0 draw against Ecuador. This meant that the island got its first ever point at the World Cup.

Thanks in part to an excellent Eloy Room, who was still under contract with PSV between 2017 and 2019, Curaçao managed to surprise friend and foe by keeping the highly regarded Ecuador to a 0-0 draw. After the match, Room was also chosen as Man of the Match.

In the international media, there was also plenty of attention after the match for The Blue Wave's performance. ''The smallest country ever at a World Cup will not go home empty-handed. Curaçao has taken a historic point against Ecuador. Thanks to the many saves by goalkeeper Eloy Room, it finished 0-0. This way, the 78-year-old national coach Dick Advocaat can check off something again from his long career'', writes Sporza.

Then the Belgian outlet addresses Room. ''Eloy Room. 37 years old, currently playing for Miami FC, with a market value of 150,000 euros and a brief past in Belgium - he played two matches for Cercle Brugge. But it seemed as if he could hold on to every ball coming his way'', according to Sporza.

Also in Germany, which won 7-1 against Curaçao and came through in stoppage time last weekend with a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast, people are talking about a historic milestone for Advocaat's men. ''A small World Cup sensation: Curaçao makes us group winners'', the newspaper BILD says as the headline, after which the outlet draws attention to the goalkeeper. ''The standout player from the small Caribbean country was goalkeeper Eloy Room (37/Miami FC, formerly PSV Eindhoven and Vitesse Arnhem). With a series of fantastic saves, he thwarted the South American favorites, who now have to wait and see whether they advance to the next round. He finished with 15 saves – a new World Cup record in a single match without extra time'', the newspaper writes.

In addition, Spanish and American media also write in glowing terms about the former PSV goalkeeper. ''Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves against the relentless attack from Ecuador, allowing the Blue Wave to draw 0-0 against heavily favored Ecuador'', writes the Spanish Marca.

FOX Sports compares Room's performance with Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha. ''First, Vozinha kept out a remarkable match against Spain. And now this. Eloy Room made no fewer than fifteen saves against Ecuador on Saturday. Fifteen! A week after he should have fished the ball out of his own net seven times against Germany, the goalkeeper from Curaçao delivered the best goalkeeping performance of the tournament: diving, parrying, stopping and reading Ecuador's attack as if he had received the script in advance,'' said the American sports broadcaster.

kijk, dit is precies waarom ik altijd zei dat Eloy top-mentaliteit had. 15 reddingen, en dan ook nog tegen een favoriet... ngl dat is peak keeper. 💯🔥

Nice little redemption arc for Room. Maar breng het ook even terug naar PSV, hoe hebben we hem destijds laten doorstromen terwijl hij nu WK-sterstatus pakt. Dit is echt "En nu dit" materiaal.

Tbh that "15 reddingen - nieuw WK-record" is insane. I remember him in that PSV period and he always looked calm, but this is another level. Props to Advocaat for trusting him.

Room man of the match, thats how you remember PSV-people. 15 saves and still 0-0, pure peak performance. Respect, even if i'd rather see it against a stronger opponent.

Eloy Room echt goated, 15 reddingen tegen Ecuador is absurd. Tbh het is ook wel lekker dat PSV nog steeds zo'n niveau door kan krijgen via onze oudjes. ❤️⚽
