End for Luuk de Jong at FC Porto already in sight? “That risk is far too big”
1 min readLast summer, Luuk de Jong left PSV after weeks of speculation and joined FC Porto. At the club in Porto as well, De Jong managed to win the league title this season under former Ajax coach Francesco Farioli.
However, due to a severe cruciate ligament injury that the former PSV striker suffered this season, De Jong has contributed almost nothing to this league title. The question is also whether the former PSV captain will still be a player for FC Porto after this season, since his contract expires this summer.
Analyst and also former footballer Jan van Halst is gloomy for the striker as well, also partly because of his age (35). ''That was of course great fun, but you almost forget it again. Because of that damn injury he sustains. I find it so sad for him and for everyone around me as well. Then you still go, one, two or three more years, depending on how long he can keep it up, to abroad. Actually, after a few weeks it’s already the end of his career. An ACL injury at that age is really, very, very difficult to overcome,'' says Van Halst on Ziggo Sport.
The former defender therefore also believes that FC Porto should not take any risks with the forward. ''No, that risk is far too big. Before a player at that age gets back into rhythm again and, of course, he might still be able to take part from time to time during the season, but you also have to be very cautious with him. As a player yourself, you are also very cautious, thinking: 'Will it work or not?''', the analyst says even more.

Van Halst therefore also does not think that De Jong will still come to play for a top club after his recovery. ''Maybe he can score a few goals, but you don’t get a player for that. I think the risk is too great. A top club like FC Porto, they will also be in the Champions League next year. But you never know'', the analyst concludes.
