Bosz gives an update: “He’s been joining in on more and more things in our training sessions.”

Last summer, Ruben van Bommel arrived from AZ for an amount of more than fifteen million euros. The left winger made a good impression at the start of the season until fate struck for the winger.

In the home match against Ajax (2-2) on 21 September 2025, Van Bommel suffered a serious knee injury that has kept him sidelined ever since. In the meantime, Ruben is back on the training field and he is also training with the group.

This told coach Peter Bosz Monday evening in Rondo on Ziggo Sport. ''He is taking part in more and more things in our training all the time'', Bosz replies when table guest Wim Kieft asks about the status of the winger.

After that, the trainer explains that Van Bommel is still not fully participating in all the drills. ''In the big positional play, we sometimes place him on the near-post side so that he stays out of the duels. But he does participate and I notice nothing about him—yes, when he takes off his pants, then I see a scar on his knee'', Bosz continues on that topic.

In addition, the coach also thinks there are no differences between Van Bommel before the serious injury and Van Bommel after his serious injury, but he rules out a comeback this season. ''In his stride, technique and shooting chances you see no difference. He is free and sensible. You might think: a few minutes this season. Medically that could be possible, but why take that risk? He doesn’t do that either,'' Bosz says about it.

In addition to Ruben van Bommel, striker Alassane Pléa will also focus on the coming season despite the fact that the Frenchman might still be in action this season. ''They will train for two weeks longer with the Under-19s. He will also start a week earlier so he can fully join us'', Bosz says about the pair.
