Another heated discussion about the Veerman–Koeman issue: “Do you know what he should have just said?”
1 min readOver the past week and a half, in many football talk shows and podcasts, there has been frequent discussion of the issue Joey Veerman - Ronald Koeman involving the Netherlands national team. After the PSV - FC Twente match (5-1) on May 17, last, Veerman, in front of the ESPN cameras, said that Koeman no longer needs to call him after it became known that the midfielder was not part of Oranje's preliminary squad and therefore no longer had a chance at a place in the World Cup squad.
Last Wednesday, the national team coach announced his squad and, at the press conference in Zeist, Koeman explained his decisions. In the podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp, writer Michel van Egmond believes that Koeman handled the press conference well.
Nevertheless, the writer believes that Koeman hasn’t handled things with Veerman all that well. ''It’s only about Veerman that he’s still a bit prickly. We should talk about that once. But otherwise, Koeman actually does that perfectly,'' said Van Egmond in the podcast.
According to businessman Rob Jansen, also the representative of the national team coach, Koeman has learned a lot from the foreign adventures he has gone through in his coaching career. ''He’s been hardened and tempered by successes and by no successes. He has learned an awful lot from the moments when things were going less well in football. When it went wrong abroad. You learn a great deal from that. He no longer gets thrown off by an interview or a press question'', Jansen believes.
Next, former PSV player Wim Kieft joins the discussion as well, and the born Amsterdam native is quite fierce towards his podcast co-hosts. ''What Koeman hasn't done wisely is with Veerman. You know what he should have just said? This whole discussion is over. I don't think he's good enough. Just watch the Euros back,'' Kieft is of the opinion.
Subsequently, Van Egmond tries to respond to the former PSV striker, but Kieft abruptly interrupts him. ''No. not 'yes, but'. How do you look at it like that?'', said the former international.
After that, the writer also notes that people will start saying that Veerman has been named 'one of the best players in the Netherlands', but Kieft is not impressed. ''The best of the Netherlands? Do you know what’s around in the Netherlands? Three times nothing. Three times nothing. Then you just have to say: listen, I don't see it working. I tried him at the European Championship, and it didn't go well there. And I still don't see it. Then you don’t take him along on technical grounds,'' concludes the analyst.

"De beste van Nederland? Drie keer niks." lmao het is wel duidelijk dat Kieft niet overtuigd is. Ik denk alleen dat je Veerman geen plek ontneemt omdat hij op het EK niet knalde, je kijkt naar ontwikkeling en rol, imo. Verder: PSV vecht tenminste met iedereen in zijn systeem, Oranje moet dat ook durven.
"De beste van Nederland? Drie keer niks. Drie keer niks." bruh, dat is echt overdreven afbranden. Als Kieft hem zelfs na de EK-niveau niet ziet, oke, maar waarom dan zo weinig nuance... Jongens, PSV-supporters voelen dit gewoon als afrekening.
Kieft zegt dat Veerman "niet goed genoeg" is en dat hij hem op het EK "probeerde". Maar dat voelt mij te hard, want selecteren is meer dan alleen wedstrijden. Koeman kan best strak zijn, alleen die steken naar Veerman houden het verhaal groter dan nodig. 🥴
bruh het punt is niet dat Veerman talent mist, het punt is dat Koeman hem totaal anders wil gebruiken. Als je steeds blijft wijzen naar die persconferentie in plaats van de voetbalkeuze, krijg je vanzelf discussie. Ik vond die Kieft-interruptie ook lmao, maar inhoudelijk heb ik wel zijn irritatie.
"Weet je wat hij gewoon had moeten zeggen? Deze hele discussie is klaar." Tja, dat klinkt stoer, maar zo werkt het dus niet bij de selectie. Als Kieft zegt "kijk even het EK terug" dan wil ik ook PSV-weekend terug zien, want daar ziet hij toch ook wat Veerman kan. Toch vind ik het eerlijker dat Koeman niet blijft prikken.
Rob Jansen zegt dat Koeman niet van slag raakt door een persvraag, maar dit dossier draait juist om die persvraag. Onhandig om het zo lang te laten doorsudderen, zeker als je al klaar bent met iemand. 💀
Kieft zegt "Ik vind hem niet goed genoeg" en dat is mij te zwart-wit. Op basis van een EK ja, maar PSV draait al maanden gewoon met hem als belangrijke schakel. Koeman kan scherp zijn, maar zijn insteek blijft: overtuigen op momenten, anders niet mee.
tbh Kieft heeft wel een punt, die persvraag aan Veerman was niet nodig om zo uit te vergroten. "Deze hele discussie is klaar" klinkt hard, maar ik snap de frustratie. Veerman had gewoon simpelweg inhoudelijk kunnen reageren, geen drama eromheen lol.
Kieft zegt "luister, ik zie het er niet in zitten", maar ik wil dan ook concreet weten wat hij bedoelt met "op technische gronden". Bij PSV zie ik hem echt momenten maken, dus dit blijft nogal ongenuanceerd. 👀
Die persconferentie in Zeist zal inhoudelijk best kloppen, maar Koeman blijft steken op Veerman. Ik vind het geen tactische discussie meer, meer een emotionele. Dat helpt de groep ook niet.
Koeman "raakt niet meer van slag", mooi, maar met Veerman klinkt het juist nog steeds als een speldenprik. Als je gewoon had kunnen zeggen dat het technisch niet past, dan was die hele talkshowsoap afgelopen. 3 pagina's discussie voor niks...

tbh ik snap die spanning met Koeman wel, maar Kieft gaat echt te ver door te zeggen "ik zie het er niet in zitten". Veerman is voor PSV gewoon op tempo en balvastheid, maar bij Oranje is het meer tactiek en rollen. Koeman heeft hem niet meer nodig om te praten, maar hij moet wel inhoudelijk helder zijn.
Koeman die het "helemaal klaar" had moeten zeggen... tbh snap ik Kieft ergens. Als je al overtuigd bent van je selectie, ga je toch niet door die hele Veerman-lens blijven prikken? 🤬
