Kansas City | Ronald Koeman makes a smart decision—does he follow a call to Eindhoven?
1 min readRonald Koeman stops with immediate effect as head coach of the Netherlands national team. The coach confirms this via Instagram from Kansas City in the United States.
'We still need to evaluate; we will talk with each other,' Nigel de Jong said diplomatically after the loss to Morocco. A day later, we can meanwhile conclude that Ronald Koeman has made the only right decisions. After the disappointing World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, he draws his conclusions and steps into action as coach of the Netherlands national team.
The World Cup ended ingloriously for the Netherlands national team with a loss to Morocco in the round of 16. Penalty shootouts, dramatically played out, ensure that Oranje can go home early again. In the group stage, Oranje remained unbeaten against Japan (2-2), Sweden (5-1) and Tunisia (3-1), but football-loving Netherlands gains nothing from that.
Koeman had a contract expiring with the KNVB, which means that after the World Cup, in principle, he would no longer be the national team coach, but the coach is now himself taking the initiative to pull the plug early after a very disappointing cycle as chairman of the Dutch national team.

Who Koeman should be replaced by has become a national issue because the name of Peter Bosz sounds frequently. It is clear why, although Bosz of course is not available. That the coach from Apeldoorn does have a bit in his arsenal is clear to everyone in the Netherlands by now. Also, the names of Arne Slot, Erik ten Hag and Pep Guardiola sound as successors to Koeman. KNVB director Nigel de Jong has repeatedly stated that up to now he has spoken to no one.
Ronald Koeman was divided across two cycles, 64 times as national team coach on the bench for the Netherlands national team. Koeman can in itself still present fairly decent figures. The Netherlands team won 35 times under Koeman. There were sixteen draws and thirteen losses. But it all doesn’t amount to much, because a grey veil hangs over Oranje with out-of-date stars such as Virgil van Dijk and Memphis Depay, who under Peter Bosz presumably wouldn’t even be selected, given the out-of-date attitude of both internationals.
The big question now is whether Peter Bosz and PSV can actually expect a call from Zeist. On paper, contractually, nothing seems to be wrong for PSV, but unfortunately that’s not how it works in football. Will there be a call from the bosses in Zeist in the near term, or will Peter Bosz simply remain in Eindhoven service?
