Valentijn Driessen is ruthless in the press room and won’t accept any answers: “Curious whether he can still get on a plane.”
1 min readRonald Koeman during the press conference of the Netherlands national team has collided hard with Valentijn Driessen after questions about the future of the national coach, which according to Valentijn Driessen can no longer be maintained. Driessen pulls out the knives just before his walk to the press room.
Ronald Koeman is going to 'set things in order' and then make a decision about his future with the Netherlands national team. That was the bone of contention for football fans in the Netherlands at the press conference after the match between Oranje and Morocco. Valentijn Driessen took exception to that and lashed out at Koeman, accusing him of everything after the dramatic international match between the two countries.
The Netherlands national team was eliminated in the second round at the World Cup already on the night from Monday to Tuesday. Koeman’s team, after extra time and penalties, lost to Morocco. At the press conference after the match, journalist Valentijn Driessen therefore casts doubt on Koeman’s position at Oranje. "Everyone in the Netherlands sees this as a failure, including me. Have you already offered your resignation to the KNVB?", Driessen immediately went on the offensive.
"I didn't do anything. I'm going to calmly think about my future", Koeman answers, visibly irritated by the question. That disappointment is still in my head. I'm going to put things in order and I'll start with that tomorrow. Maybe I'll have figured it out by tomorrow."

With that answer, Driessen, however, did not agree. "But big coaches often do take responsibility and you’ve only made it to the second round. You know yourself that this leads to nothing more." Koeman wanted nothing to do with Driessen’s words. "Because I’m not saying what you’d like to hear now, does that mean I’m not taking responsibility? Can I also say that I haven’t thought about that yet? I can’t say anything more about it now," Koeman stayed calm throughout.
Driessen spoke out strongly in favor of his trip to the press room and even said he was wondering whether Koeman should not be fired immediately after the penalty shootout loss against Morocco. "Koeman can no longer be maintained; I'm curious whether he may still get on the plane," snarled Driessen, before then expressing with some nuance: "But yes, he also has to go back to the Netherlands..."
