Does the KNVB intervene today after scandalous match statistics? | “Selecting on possession percentage would mean a phone call to Bosz today.”
1 min readPeter Bosz must look at the Netherlands with horror - Morocco has looked, if the coach from Apeldoorn has even looked, because for this Dutch team you literally and figuratively do not get by.
The KNVB and Dutch football are completely embarrassed after the match against a fitter, better and sharper Moroccan team. Total fear viewed from the perspective of Ronald Koeman, who, of course, has coached his last match for the Netherlands national team.
That is also precisely the whole problem: Ronald Koeman is a coach and not a manager who can forge a group of players into a tight team with a bold tactical vision. Ronald Koeman had Oranje perform dramatically badly in his second term as national team coach, with the negative low point being the fiasco against Morocco.
The head coach opted for cowardly certainty with a 5-2-3 variant, in which Nathan Aké came into the lineup at the expense of Tijjani Reijnders. Afterward, it produced truly scandalous match statistics that do not fit Dutch football. Peter Bosz must have watched the last international match of Ronald Koeman with eagle eyes.

The KNVB should in fact intervene even before the squad leaves for Amsterdam regarding the future of the Netherlands national team. Especially when it comes to the percentage of ball possession, because in Monterrey Oranje managed to end the match with only 30% possession against Morocco. Based on this, admittedly not insignificant, match statistic, Peter Bosz could in fact be asked about it by the KNVB today.

I get the criticism of Koeman, but quoting only possession percentages feels too simplistic. Still, the substitution choice in that 5-2-3, Aké over Reijnders, sounds like a risk-avoidance that punished Oranje's control. If Bosz is being asked about anything today, it should be how to create structure and chances instead of clinging to safety stats.
