PSV could take over their transfer target earlier this summer, on a free transfer

1 min read

Now that the summer transfer window is set to open again soon, rumors are slowly starting to pick up as well. Earnie Stewart will normally be the first to set his sights on the defense, where, among others, Jerdy Schouten must temporarily be replaced.

On social media, the name of Danilo Doekhi, a player for Union Berlin, surfaced last week. PSV had already shown interest in the central defender earlier, but that doesn’t seem to be the case this summer. Still, it was checked for a moment.

Club watcher Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad wrote just last week: “I’ve just looked into it. Doekhi was mentioned in connection with PSV two to three years ago, but it never really became very concrete. Now he’s going for another segment, expected again abroad. There’s nothing happening at the moment.”

The central defender from Rotterdam was previously linked to PSV on several occasions and had yet another strong season last season with Bundlesigaclub Union Berlin. However, Doekhi will not be extending his contract with Union, bringing a transfer-free departure closer.

Doekhi therefore does not seem to be on PSV's radar, however much strengthening the defense may need. Last season, Doekhi scored five goals in 34 league appearances, which are solid figures for a central defender. In the meantime, PSV is being linked with Ruud Nijstad from FC Twente and Sergi Dominguez from Dinamo Zagreb.

Gotta say, the article highlights a clear pattern with the buildup: they want the early progression through the half-spaces. If the opponent blocks the inside lanes, PSV need a plan B immediately, otherwise it becomes predictable.

I dont get why we keep forcing crosses into the first defender. With our pace, cutbacks and through balls are right there, use it 😅

That pressing trigger from the front is actually key. When we do it as a unit, the opponent looks uncomfortable fast 🔥⚽

"PSV Inside" is cooking, but i dont buy the defensive plan. You cant invite that much pressure and expect the backline to win every second ball 💀

Tbh the fullback balance worries me. Every time the ball goes wide, the other side feels one step behind, and that invites easy cutbacks. Still, when Til turns on it looks like a different gear 🔥

"PSV Inside" needs to be more ruthless with the game state. Too many times we slow it down in the middle, and then the fullbacks are late to support. Thats on the midfield, not the defenders 👀

If PSV keep building out from the back like that, opponents will just press the half-spaces and take over. Tbh it looked shaky when the press arrived, Dumfries is a magnet for turnovers.

If PSV lets him drift inside again, we are basically inviting the press to win the second ball. Still, that first touch he had was clean, proper threat at the half-space 🔥

Burned by the same pattern again. When the fullback steps up, Til/Nmecha-style runs behind get punished. Fix the cover and we are dangerous.

If PSV really wants control, we need better buildup from the 6. Right now it feels like the ball goes long too early and we lose the midfield edge.

If PSV are really going to keep that high press, i just hope the midfield doesnt get caught walking again. Cody Gakpo needs to start attacking space faster, not just hold up play.
