Ronald Waterreus appoints new national team coach: “In my view, the time has come”

1 min read

Also Ronald Waterreus has not missed that Ronald Koeman announced last week that he will step down as head coach of the Netherlands national team. As a result, the KNVB must look for a new head coach.

Despite the fact that Peter Bosz extended his contract with PSV in February until 2028, the name of Bosz is also mentioned as a successor to Koeman. The names of Arne Slot, Pep Guardiola, and Michael Reiziger are also mentioned.

''If the KNVB should soon run into one of these men: they have my blessing, there in Zeist'', writes Waterreus in his column for De Limburger.

Despite this, the former PSV goalkeeper hopes that the KNVB will put forward another name, and in doing so an eye-catching name is mentioned. ''No, as far as I’m concerned, the time has come to appoint Sarina Wiegman as national team coach,'' Waterreus writes further.

According to the former goalkeeper, who himself played for Oranje seven times, Wiegman is the ultimate national coach. ''I see some of you choking on your plate of yoghurt with muesli already. Like: 'Huh, a woman as coach of our most imagination-captivating men's team? Has our home scribe gone mad, or something?' It's not so bad, you know. Wiegman, named by FIFA five times as the best female coach in the world, is simply the ultimate national coach for Oranje'', the native from Limburg believes.

Yet Waterreus is realistic enough to understand that the KNVB will not end up with Wiegman. ''This probably won't happen. If, when they're in Zeist, for the extremely traditional part of the media that recoils from change and emancipation (Bah, woke!), is involved, then technical director Nigel de Jong probably won't even sit down with Wiegman." Waterreus concludes with a message for the KNVB director. 'Nigel, manifest yourself as 'td' at least as fearlessly as you were back on the football pitch. (...) Appoint Wiegman as Koeman's successor,'' concludes the former PSV player.
