Noni Madueke loses his starting spot
1 min readFormer PSV player Noni Madueke is gearing up with England for the semi-final of the 2026 World Cup in North America, where The Three Lions face reigning world champions Argentina. In the quarter-final against Norway (1-2), Madueke was substituted for Bukayo Saka, and against the Argentines, the former PSV man seems to have to be content with a spot on the bench.
The winger made anything but an impression against Norway and was therefore taken off by the national coach Thomas Tuchel. Madueke’s poor performance against the Norwegians therefore seems to be costing him his starting spot.
Harry Kane will once again be the attacking leader for the English. The superstar striker already scored six times in this final tournament and is still in the running to become the tournament’s top scorer.
On the flanks, Kane will be assisted by Anthony Gordon from the left and thus Saka from the right instead of Madueke. Behind the striker position, Jude Bellingham will once again take on a free role.
In addition, it remains to be seen whether Tuchel will have midfielder Declan Rice fit in time for the clash with the South Americans. Rice was taken off early in the match against Norway and has been dealing with a virus over the past few days.
English media expect the midfielder to simply be fit on time and be assisted by Elliot Anderson. The defense will most likely be formed by Jordan Pickford in goal, Reece James at right-back, Ezri Konsa and Marc Guéhi as the central duo, and Nico O'Reilly at left-back.

Eén slechte wedstrijd en meteen basisplaats kwijt, dat is de topsport realiteit. Toch denk ik dat Gordon vs Argentinië gevaarlijk kan worden, en als Madueke erin komt kan hij altijd nog iets forceren 🔥.
"werd daarom ook naar de kant gehaald" ... ze hebben hem dus gewoon hard afgerekend. Maar eerlijk, Tuchel gaat wel lekker pragmatisch, en Saka is voorlopig gewoon betrouwbaarder.
Madueke deed echt niks tegen Noorwegen, snap Tuchel helemaal. Je ziet gewoon dat Saka vanaf rechts meer dreiging geeft, en Kane scoort toch al te makkelijk. Noni komt dan als tactische wissel, maar startpositie is verdiend door prestaties.
tbh Noni op de bank zegt alles over die wissel tegen Noorwegen. Van Madueke verwacht ik meer, maar als Saka dan wél loopt krijg je gewoon geen basisplaats terug. hopelijk pakt hij tegen argentinie wél zijn moment, als het spel openbreekt 🔥
Madueke op de bank tegen Argentinië terwijl Kane gewoon start... ja dat is echt pijnlijk om te zien. Tegen Noorwegen was hij inderdaad niet goed, maar imo nog steeds een gemiste kans voor Engeland.
