René van der Gijp looks back on jokes about former PSV player

1 min read

Stanislav Manolev. Does the name still ring a bell for many a PSV fan? Just about. It was the Bulgarian right back who came to PSV in the summer of 2009 and was regularly taken down a peg by analyst René van der Gijp.

Van der Gijp always did this on Vandaag Inside, back when it was still known as Voetbal International on RTL7. The Dordrecht analyst had almost every week a moment when he couldn’t help but come his way around his favorite 'Manolev moment'.

In the section De Krantjes van Vandaag Inside, a segment that was introduced during VI Oranje in Scheveningen in the years 2010, 2012 and 2014, the former footballer looks back with self-criticism on the period in which Manolev was regularly taken down by him. The former footballer does this together with presenter Wilfred Genee from Curaçao.

''It is always very nice when you have people around you who keep an eye on that a bit,'' Van der Gijp begins openly to Genee when the gentlemen talk about Humberto Tan and Gijp tells that Tan has started to believe too much in himself, according to his environment.

After that, Van der Gijp brings up moments with Manolev. ''Actually, someone could have told me that too, but it was at the very beginning, with Manolev, when he was like: 'Hey, you don't know what you're doing.' You know? 'It's quite often fun to show a cutback from that guy who shows up in the parking lot. But don't make a habit of it''', is Gijp being honest.

''And at that time I probably wouldn't have been receptive to reason. That was also the beginning for me, where I went to the baker and to the butcher and where I went to the bank to get money and everyone said: 'Manolev-momentje?' You know? Then you think to yourself: 'I’m not going to let them down.' Then you just sit and watch an entire PSV match for such a f*cking moment. Oh well'', Van der Gijp concludes with a laugh.
