“Useless PSV player on the way back to the old club”
1 min readJoël Drommel will leave PSV after five years and return to FC Twente. With this news, among others, the Eindhovens Dagblad and Tubantia have come forward.
At FC Twente, the goalkeeper will sign a contract through 2030. According to Tubantia, PSV will receive an amount of just over half a million for the keeper who in 2021 came from Enschede to Eindhoven for 3.5 million euros.
Since his arrival at PSV, Drommel has never been beyond dispute and by the end of the 2021/2022 season the goalkeeper was passed over by Roger Schmidt in favor of Yvon Mvogo. From the 2022/2023 season to 2024/2025, Drommel was the substitute goalkeeper behind Walter Benitez.
So in all those seasons the goalkeeper of PSV was the closing act in the Cup, and in 2022/2023 Drommel played an important role during the cup final against Ajax. In this way, the goalkeeper managed to turn away Edson Alvarez’s attempt, allowing PSV under Ruud van Nistelrooij to extend the KNVB Cup.
Drommel was loaned to Sparta Rotterdam last season by PSV after signing Matej Kovar and Nick Olij. In Rotterdam-West, Drommel made a good impression and kept all 34 competitive matches.
The goalkeeper then returned to PSV, but already knew that the chance of playing time would be slim in Eindhoven. During the match that was lost against AZ (0-4), the goalkeeper was also not included in the match squad.

Credit to Drommel for the Edson Alvarez save, that was a real decisive moment. But PSV moving on makes sense if they want a clear number 1, even if the money and timeline feel a bit underwhelming.
Ik vind het vooral logisch dat hij terug gaat waar hij tot 2030 kan spelen. Benitez en dan Kovar en Olij deden hem gewoon voorbij, en als je wordt gepasseerd dan wil je niet nog een seizoen wachten. W voor Drommel, maar PSV heeft nu wel duidelijk doorgezet.
Idk if PSV handled it perfectly. If he was the cup keeper all those years, why not give him more domestic minutes earlier? The fact it ended with 0-4 AZ and no selection says it all 🙄
lol nu terug naar twente, daar heeft hij tenminste vertrouwen. ben benieuwd of PSV spijt krijgt als we weer zo'n keeper nodig hebben voor cup-fluitje-bocht momenten. 👀
🔥 2022/2023 reserve behind Benitez, then loan to Sparta and all matches, and still back to being "overbodig". That cup final hero status should have earned him more.
Bekerkeeper, ja. Competitiekeeper, minder. tbh ik vond hem in 2021/2022 al niet echt onomstreden, dus deze move naar twente is best "peak" voor zijn carrière. 💀
Die 0-4 tegen AZ en dan niet eens bij de selectie, dat voelt echt als een signaal. imo PSV doet dit financieel slim met ruim een half miljoen, maar sportief is het ook een beetje zuur voor drommel.
"overbodige PSV'er" is wel hard, maar ik snap de vibe. als je 34 wedstrijden bij sparta pakt en daarna bij ons geen selectie haalt tegen AZ... dan zeg je wel iets over je kansen.

"om het bedrag van ruim een half miljoen" vind ik echt niet veel voor iemand die ooit 3,5 miljoen gekost heeft. Ja, contract tot 2030 is mooi voor Twente, maar wij lijken alweer te verliezen op de transfers, imo.
fair play voor joel drommel, hij heeft ze bekerfinale tegen ajax echt gered. maar tbh in de competitie was het te wisselvallig, en dan ga je logisch naar twente waar je speelt. 🔥
Crazy that Drommel never got fully trusted, but he still saved us in that cup final vs Ajax. Feels like a 6/10 move for his career, but PSV should do better with keeping rotation.
