The “no” from this German club led to a million-dollar deal for PSV and Borussia Dortmund
1 min readThe transfer of Joey Veerman from PSV to Borussia Dortmund has been arranged within a fairly short timeframe. A good week ago, the German million-euro club contacted Veerman and his management, after which it quickly moved on to the midfielder from Volendam, who seems to have blossomed again entirely after his stupid red card against AZ.
At the time of the red card, Dortmund was not yet really in the picture, although the club from the Ruhr area had been keeping tabs on Veerman since 2024. Still, a million-euro transfer of Veerman to Dortmund involved a lot of moving parts. Also from Dortmund’s perspective, and that of its scouts. The million-euro club had, after all, set its sights on a top talent from 1.FC Köln.
Borussia Dortmund wanted to take over the 19-year-old top talent Said El Mala from 1. FC Köln, but the club from the City of Domes asked for a far too high asking price of around 50 to 55 million euros, after which Dortmund withdrew from the negotiations. The talent subsequently, surprisingly, extended his contract with Cologne until 2031 and was given the number 10 shirt, something he had reportedly requested according to German media.
After this aborted transfer, Dortmund decided to activate and concretize its interest in Joey Veerman. In fact, 1. FC Koln's 'no' ensured that Joey Veerman came to be seen concretely on the radar of the yellow-and-black club from Dortmund. This is reported by a German source in conversation with PSV Inside.

Kenneth Perez predicts a great future at the German club. The Dane believes that Veerman is ready for a new step. “But I didn’t expect a club of this caliber anymore,” the football analyst at ESPN admits. According to the Dane, he has unique qualities. “But you don’t get all this space in a normal competition. If he gets the space and time, there is no better than Joey Veerman. Fantastic.”
Perez adds a nuance to this. “But of course there are also many matches in which it has to be faster, and then it gets harder.” The Volendam player will have to show in Dortmund that he is indeed good enough not only to excel in the Eredivisie, but also at the very highest level. In that case, more good news is on the horizon for the midfielder.
