PSV loses the battle for a sought-after midfielder
1 min readEarlier this week, among others Spanish transfer journalist Ivan Quirós reported that PSV was still very much in the running to bring Azzedine Ounahi to Eindhoven. In doing so, Quirós also wrote that Ajax would in fact pull back in the race for the midfielder from Girona.
Despite this, PSV appears to be moving in on the arrival of a Moroccan midfielder. According to French journalist Santi Aouna from the outlet Foot Mercato, Panathinaikos in Greece is going to be the one to land Ounahi.
That writes Aouna on the social media platform X. Quirós also earlier this week already reported the Greek club’s interest in the midfielder.
So the Greeks now seem to be going ahead with their Moroccan midfielder. Panathinaikos wanted, after all, to make Ounahi the best-paid footballer in Greece.
Now, the Greeks, according to Aouna, want to quickly take care of the arrival of the midfielder so they can also register him for the UEFA Europa Conference League. In the League Phase, the club from Athens will not play any matches against Ajax, with whom Ounahi initially seemed to have personally reached an agreement.

Wie kijkt mee naar het vervolg? Als we Ounahi verliezen omdat PAO hem Europa meteen kan geven, dan moet PSV nu komen met iets vergelijkbaars in tempo of salaris. Anders wordt het weer een seizoen 'bijna'.

I read the Europa Conference League angle and it makes sense, they can register him quickly for European minutes. Still, you cant sell me the story that PSV lost just because of scheduling, this looks like a negotiation gap.
panathinaikos speedrunning the deal is crazy 💀. "Best paid player of Greece" is such an obvious lure, but youd think PSV would match the ambition, especially after that personal agreement talk with Ajax being out.
If true, this one hurts. PSV still "in the race" sounds like they were too late again, and Ounahi is exactly the profile you want in the middle.
tbh dit voelt als een domino-effect. Eerst 'we zijn volop in de race' van Quirós, daarna ineens voet Mercato en X dat PAO hem pakt. Als dit klopt, is het niet alleen pech, het is gebrekkige deal-strategie. 👀
Ajax trekt zich terug en dan grijpen wij niet door. Ounahi als bestbetaalde in Griekenland... dat is gewoon een lokkertje met geld, maar PSV had toch beter moeten timen. 🤦♂️
Damn, weer net te laat. Als Panathinaikos hem meteen Europa Conference League wil inschrijven snap ik het wel, maar toch zuur dat we het persoonlijk akkoord schijnbaar niet konden verzilveren. 🔥
