PSV fan through and through left, first reaction…
1 min readIn the summer of 2021, goalkeeper Joël Drommel from FC Twente moved to PSV. Now, five years later, Drommel takes the reverse route and the goalkeeper returns to Enschede.
Drommel has actually never been entirely beyond dispute since his arrival at PSV. In his first season, the goalkeeper was even replaced by coach Roger Schmidt toward the end of the season in favor of the loanee Yvon Mvogo.
With the arrival of Walter Benítez in 2022, Drommel became the undisputed second-choice goalkeeper, but the keeper under Ruud van Nistelrooij and Peter Bosz was the cup goalkeeper on behalf of PSV. In the 2023 Cup final against Ajax, the shot-stopper played an important role in the penalty shootout by saving Edson Álvarez’s penalty, after which Fabio Silva fired PSV to cup glory.
Last season, Drommel was already loaned out to Sparta Rotterdam due to the arrival of Matej Kovar and Nick Olij. This season was also fairly clear that there was no prospect of playing time, and so the PSV goalkeeper was allowed to leave.
In a press release from PSV, Drommel expresses his gratitude to the club. ''I look back on an unforgettable period in PSV service. Together we have experienced many successes, including winning league titles, KNVB Cups and Johan Cruyff Shields. I have always had a great bond with both the people within the club and the supporters. I want to thank everyone for the trust and appreciation that I have felt from day one. PSV will always keep a special place in my heart. I wish the club every success and no doubt we will see each other again in the Philips Stadium,'' says the goalkeeper on the PSV website.
Technical director Earnest Stewart also expresses his gratitude to the closer. ''Joël has always conducted himself as a true professional throughout his time with PSV. In different stages of his time at the club, he has always put the team’s interests first and thrown himself fully into PSV. With his positive attitude and reliability, he was a valued presence within the squad. We thank Joël for his contribution to our successes and wish him all the luck and success at FC Twente,'' said Stewart about the Bussumer, who has been a PSV supporter since his youth and has been following the club closely for many years in anticipation of his transfer to PSV.

Oké afscheid met klasse, maar ik ben wel benieuwd hoe PSV dit opvangt. Als je net in de uitloop Bekerfinale zo'n rol pakt, dan voelt het toch als iets onvoltooieds... #PSV
🔥 Drommel tweede keeper en toch bekerheld. Ik snap Stewart z'n verhaal, maar ik blijf vinden dat Schmidt hem te vroeg weg zette in seizoen 1.
"Ik wens de club veel succes en ongetwijfeld zien we elkaar weer in het Philips Stadion" bruh, thats classic Drommel. Hoop dat hij bij Twente weer minuten pakt, want hij verdiende gewoon een stabielere rol bij PSV.
idk man, ik blijf toch balen dat hij met die FC Twente comeback nu alweer vertrekt zonder veel minuten. Ik snap de keuze door de komst van Kovar en Olij, maar als keeper heb je juist ritme nodig. Ben benieuwd hoe hij het daar gaat doen. 👀
"PSV zal altijd een bijzondere plek in mijn hart behouden." Echt wel een mooie lijn, maar ik hoop dat Kovar/Olij nu gewoon de echte nummer 1 worden. Drommel had betrouwbaarheid, maar we hadden te vaak wissels rond de goal. 🔥⚽
Vijf jaar PSV en toch steeds die onzekerheid... Eerst Schmidt die hem passeert, daarna Benitez en vervolgens bekerkeeper onder Van Nistelrooij/Bosz. Maar goed, strafschoppenreeks tegen Ajax vergeet je niet. Veel succes in Enschede, Twente-fan-gevoel blijft gewoon familie.
so logisch dat hij vertrekt. Kovar en Olij, en dan nog Benitez eerder... speeltijd was gewoon gone. Alleen jammer, want ik vond Drommel wel altijd professioneel.
Tbh Drommel altijd net die "beker-wissel" geweest. Maar tegen Ajax 2023 die penalty stop van Edson Alvarez was echt peak clutch, en je zag meteen waarom PSV hem nodig had.
Tbh vind ik het stiekem wel logisch, maar ik vond Drommel echt momenten van klasse hebben. Vooral die penaltystop tegen Ajax in 2023, dat was echt PSV op z'n best in het bekervoetbal. Jammer dat er uiteindelijk toch geen structurele plek was.
