In Rotterdam-West people are fed up with the departure: “In sports terms, it’s a setback.”
1 min readAyoni Santos was officially presented by PSV on Wednesday morning as a new player. Santos is coming for an amount of five million euros from Sparta Rotterdam and has signed a contract until mid-2031.
The attacking midfielder worked his way through the club’s entire youth academy from Rotterdam-West starting in 2012. Last October, Santos made his debut for the senior side of the Spangenars during the away win against FC Groningen (0-2).
Gerard Nijkamp, technical director of Sparta Rotterdam, has responded to the departure of their youth prodigy. ''For us, this is the example that shows what training is all about. We have seen Ayoni grow up at Sparta since he was nine, improve as a footballer, and ultimately make the step to the first team. To then deliver him within a year to a top club in the Netherlands, and for an even record amount, is something to be proud of'' Nijkamp says on the club channel of the Kasteelheren.
The TD is definitely disappointed about the departure of the midfielder. ''At the same time, we can't ignore the fact that Ayoni's departure is an athletic setback. We would have liked to see him grow with us for at least another year, but we also understand that if PSV's interest is as concrete as it is now, he will want to take this step'', says Nijkamp.
The fresh-from-the-start PSV player also addresses the Sparta faithful. ''At first, it wasn't my plan to make a transfer already this summer, but that changed when I heard about PSV's interest. For me, this offer feels like an opportunity I can't let pass me by. That said, I will undoubtedly miss Sparta and the supporters a great deal, although I will no doubt still be present in the stands often as a supporter,'' Santos said.

5 miljoen is prima, contract tot 2031 is zelfs netjes. Maar als we hem halen omdat PSV ook wil doorpakken, dan moet hij niet alleen talent zijn, hij moet ook beslissend worden. goated keuze als het meteen klikt. 🚀
lol Sparta is trots, maar ook gewoon zuur natuurlijk dat hij weg is na nog geen seizoen in het eerste. Als Santos binnen één jaar de stap maakt, dan moeten wij ook niet lullen over geduld. Benieuwd of hij het tempo in PSV kan dragen, anders is het snel "mid" en klaar... 🔥
"op sportief vlak een aderlating" snap t wel, maar bij PSV kun je hem ook inzetten als brug naar de spits. Ik ben benieuwd hoe snel hij draait in de opbouw en of hij druk kan geven zonder bal. 🔥
als Sparta hem binnen 1 jaar verkoopt aan een topclub voor een recordbedrag... begrijpelijk dat ze balen. Bij PSV ga je hem echt nodig hebben, anders is die 'adderlating' meteen een gemiste kans voor ons. 👀
5 miljoen voor Santos voelt als een slimme deal. Maar ik snap Sparta wel, technisch gezien verlies je gewoon een ontwikkelde speler die nog door kon groeien. Ayoni als aanvallende middenvelder moet bij PSV meteen rendement geven.

tbh ik vind het mooi dat PSV dit soort jeugdstappen maakt, niet alleen spelers kopen. Santos zei dat het niet zijn plan was deze zomer te gaan, maar zodra PSV concreet werd snap ik het 100%. Hoop dat hij meteen minuten pakt en geen bankdebutant wordt 👀
5 miljoen en contract tot 2031, dat is echt serieus investeren. Ayoni komt uit de eigen jeugd en binnen 1 jaar al naar PSV, snap Sparta wel dat ze "aderlating" zeggen, maar voor ons is dit gewoon een mooie upgrade.
