“CL rival PSV strengthens itself with former Manchester United defender”
1 min readOn 20 October, PSV play away at FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League. The Portuguese will strengthen their defense in the short term.
None other than former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling must go strengthen the defense of the Portuguese side. That is reported, among other things, by transfer journalist Nicolo Schira on the social media platform X.
Smalling, now 36 years old, is currently enjoying a transfer-free status following his departure from Al Fayha in Saudi Arabia. Before that, the Englishman was under contract with Manchester United between 2010 and 2020.
In the 2019/2020 season, the centre-back was loaned to AS Roma before being permanently signed in the summer of 2020. In 2022, Smalling, under coach José Mourinho, won the first edition of the UEFA Europa Conference League with the Romans after winning the final 1-0 against Feyenoord.
In 2024, the 36-year-old defender decided to leave AS Roma behind and seek his fortune in the Middle East. Smalling signed a contract with Al Fayha and saw his contract expire last summer.
Since then, the former Mancunian has often been linked with a return to Europe. Among others, Valencia CF was mentioned as a new destination, but FC Porto now seems to have bitten, and the Englishman is expected to be presented soon as a new signing.
Smalling will, however, not be in the squad during the match FC Porto - PSV on 20 October in the billion-euro clash. This is because the deadline for registering all players has already passed and only when Os Dragões qualifies at least for the round of play-offs of the Champions League can the defender also take part in European competition.

Tbh vind ik dit een vreemde timing. Veel Porto-fans willen altijd "versterking", maar Smalling als tijdelijke CL-optie voelt meer als veiligheidsnet dan structurele kwaliteit. PSV moet vooral geen slordige duels toestaan in het begin.
Chris Smalling 36 jaar, transfervrij, en dan meteen Porto... goed getimed, lol. Als hij pas na kwalificatie kan spelen, moeten we in die wedstrijd gewoon vol druk zetten en hun opbouw slopen 🔥⚽
Op 20 oktober speelt hij dus niet mee, dus dat scheelt voor PSV. Maar imo is dit vooral bedoeld om na kwalificatie meteen weer agressief te kunnen verdedigen, dat kan gevaarlijk zijn.
Nooo dit is gewoon peak Mourinho-era vibes in Porto. Niet dat het PSV tegenhoudt, maar wel tricky als ze straks die routinier erbij krijgen. 🤔⚽
Ow echt, Smalling kan pas als Porto minimaal door is. Dat betekent dat PSV bij Porto waarschijnlijk gewoon tegen hun huidige centrumverdediging speelt, dus focus op pressing en diepte bal. Geen excuses, jongens.
Smalling bij Porto is echt zo'n oud-ijzer transfer. Tbh dat maakt die defensie meteen meer solide, maar ik vraag me af of hij nog snelheid heeft tegen onze counters in Porto-thuis.
Smalling 36 en transfervrij, klinkt als oud-voor-sterk materiaal. Ik snap wel dat Porto die ervaring wil, maar tegen PSV is tempo alles... ben benieuwd.
Chris Smalling bij Porto, tja. Maar als PSV slim speelt dan zal Porto echt niet ineens onklopbaar zijn achterin. Hopelijk gebruikt PSV de ruimtes achter hun linies.
