Xavi targets two former PSV players
1 min readVirgil van Dijk remains under Xavi Hernandez as captain of the Oranje. In addition, Xavi has designated two former PSV players as provisional deputy captains.
In an interview with NOS, the Spanish coach reveals that former PSV captains Denzel Dumfries and Cody Gakpo will be the vice-captains of the Netherlands national team. The same applies for this international break to defender Nathan Aké.
During the next international break in mid-November, Xavi, together with his assistants, will once again review which players are most suitable to be included among the reserve captains of the Netherlands. That means the decision to make, among others, Dumfries and Gakpo reserve captains is therefore still not 100% certain.
Facing the NOS camera, the Spaniard goes deeper into his choices. ''Not only Virgil is important. Denzel (Dumfries, ed.), Cody (Gakpo, ed.), Nathan (Aké, ed.), the more experienced players should help the young players and the new generation,'' says the former top footballer.
Then Xavi continues. ''Of course they must be important within the squad. Since Frenkie (De Jong, ed.) is not there, Denzel, Cody and Nathan will be the stand-in captains'', said the national team coach.

Viering waard als oud-PSV weer invloed heeft, maar mid november is het nog testen. Als Aké erbij blijft en de selectie jong genoeg is, dan gaat het voor PSV sowieso doorwerken in hun spel. Brengt maar een vraag: wie gaat er dan op het veld echt de boel dragen? 👀🔥
"Omdat Frenkie (De Jong, red.) er niet bij is"... dus nu schuift het door. Tbh verwacht ik dat Xavi vooral rust en leiderschap wil, en dan is Dumfries echt een no-nonsense keuze. Gakpo als backup-anker kan ook, zolang hij niet alleen als coach-popje gebruikt wordt.
Dumfries en Gakpo als reserve-aanvoerders is logisch, fr maar wel jammer dat Frenkie ontbreekt. Voor Oranje is het een slimme mix van ervaring en recent PSV-gevoel. Wat mij betreft mogen ze ze gewoon lekker laten spelen, dan wordt het vanzelf duidelijk.
