Wout Weghorst points to Xavi and to PSV: “We’ll take them.”

1 min read

Wout Weghorst is still setting many tongues wagging. Even as a striker for FC Twente. On Sunday, PSV awaits and the Tukker has faith.

Believe in what exactly, because what is truly heartfelt, it’s also not again for the long run, one that never makes a murder pit out of his heart. Praying on the couch in the Johan Cruijff Arena or reading a book instead. Being open about things is also not unfamiliar to him. In fact, Weghorst is a great guy, but many are annoyed by him.

Weghorst made the 2026 World Cup part of the Netherlands national team squad, but the tournament was no great success for him and certainly not for Oranje either.

Weghorst recently said something striking about Oranje: ‘Something has to change’, referring to the approach, working method, style of play, and so on. In any case, one change is that he is no longer selected under the new national team coach.

“You’re at the World Cup, trying to get everything out of it with full conviction. But again those penalties… That was also a moment of pressure, of taking responsibility. In the end, we also showed too little personality in that. That is something that has been missing for me at this World Cup. Things have to be clearly done differently if you want to be successful.”

"I do think that something has to change in order to be successful. But I am always available. I am a very proud Dutchman, who always wants to play for the Netherlands national team", but Xavi thinks differently about that.

At FC Twente things are going reasonably well, but beating PSV doesn’t seem to be in the cards: “With the team we’re making progress, and I’m happy that I’m adding value in that. The first matches—that wasn’t the start you hope for. But now it’s going well. Very positive. I know from myself: if I get the chances and the minutes, then I also know that I can score goals. And provide assists. That’s what’s happening now.”

"You just have to force it. That you earn the trust, that the coordination with other boys goes better. That is energy. Just energy. If you’re still looking around yourself, then it becomes harder. Now you aren’t. You play with a lot more conviction. Play good matches again. You have to force it yourself. I’m happy that it worked out for me, together with the Lord. That gives satisfaction. It’s up to me to keep going in this way, then it will be fine", the Tukker points to his faith.

So trust is back with the striker, but once again said, beating PSV is another extreme. Not for Weghorst for the time being, however, because in conversation with regional media the long striker said about the match against PSV: “We’ll take them.”
