Willem van Hanegem surprised and wary of Ajax in the title race with PSV: 'Ajax is not the biggest contender'

After a sluggish start to the season, it seems as though PSV has found its momentum in the pursuit of the fourth consecutive national title. Peter Bosz's side ran riot, scoring freely in the home match against FC Groningen and in the away fixture with FC Utrecht (1-6).

For PSV, Saturday evening at 8 p.m. the first Topper is on the schedule. The Bosz side will take on Ajax at the Johan Cruijff Arena in matchday 5.

Despite all the purchases that the Amsterdam fans have made under technical director Jordi Cruijff, Feyenoord icon Willem van Hanegem does not expect the capital club to become PSV’s biggest challenger this season. Van Hanegem says this in the podcast Willem & Wessel from Algemeen Dagblad.

According to De Kromme, who is surprised by his own opinion, namely AZ could become PSV’s biggest challenger this season. After four matches, the Alkmaarders are still unbeaten and hope on Sunday afternoon to continue that run when Leeroy Echteld’s team visits sc Heerenveen.

''There are probably six or seven potential internationals sitting there. I would like it if AZ could take on PSV. There’s a lot of football in that,'' Van Hanegem says.

Earlier this season, AZ already managed to win away at PSV 0-4 in the race for the Johan Cruijff Shield, partly thanks to an early red card for Joey Veerman, and ESPN analyst Hans Kraay Junior also sees Alkmaar Zaanstreek as a serious challenger for PSV. ''AZ is a super fun club to watch'', said Kraay.
