Willem van Hanegem predicts a great future for PSV player

1 min read

PSV'er Ruben van Bommel has made a good impression on Willem van Hanegem. Van Hanegem lets it be known in Algemeen Dagblad.

Van Bommel came Sunday evening during the match Serbia - Netherlands (1-2) onto the pitch early for former PSV player Cody Gakpo. Gakpo was injured and could not continue playing.

Last Thursday, during his debut as a substitute for Crysencio Summerville against Germany (1-1), Van Bommel was already good for an assist in stoppage time on Gakpo. Because of this, Van Hanegem believes that the current PSV player will become an important figure for Oranje in the future.

''Ruben van Bommel has also shown himself. In Belgrade he shot at goal a little too often and the ball that Guus Til laid dramatically wide, he could no longer put in. The ball should have gone to Summerville. But in the future, Van Bommel will certainly become a decisive player for Oranje,'' writes De Kromme in his column for the AD.

In addition, the Feyenoord icon is also pleased with the fact that former PSV player Memphis Depay has not been selected by Xavi as a replacement for the injured Brian Brobbey. ''I’m happy that Joshua Zirkzee is in the group and that Memphis hasn’t been called up as an extra striker after Brian Brobbey dropped out. We have to move on and Zirkzee can really mean something for a team against defensive sides,'' that’s what it sounds like.

Also AZ striker Mexx Meerdink, who wrote the two Oranje goals to his name in Belgrade, can count on a lot of praise from De Kromme. ''Mexx Meerdink did that too, and it was nice to see. He lays balls off and his 1-2 was a fine goal. And he took a penalty, but I understand that, because the rest has missed once already or doesn’t dare to take it. What I do find funny is this: we call him a young talent, but he is already 22 years old. These are indeed the years when he has to be there,'' said Van Hanegem.

Mexx Meerdink getting called a "young talent" at 22 is funny lol. But good on him for those two goals and the assist style play. Ruben van Bommel needs to keep that momentum, otherwise this praise will cool off fast 💯

De Kromme saying the ball should have gone to Summerville is fair criticism. If Ruben cleans up that decision making, he becomes way more dangerous in Oranje and at PSV. As for Zirkzee staying in the group and Depay not getting picked, tbh i like the more structured plan 👀

"Ook Ruben van Bommel heeft zich laten zien." yeah i agree, but he also shot too much on Belgrado imo. Still, the pass to Til that didnt get finished tells me there is chemistry growing, and that is the main thing 🔥

If Van Hanegem sees Ruben van Bommel as a future Oranje player, i get the hype. The Gakpo situation aside, those early touches and the assists vs Germany are exactly what we want at PSV.
