Veerman, frankly: “That was the top of the world”
1 min readUnlike Ronald Koeman, Xavi Hernandez is positive about Joey Veerman. Xavi said earlier this week during a press conference.
The former PSV player fell out of view for Oranje under Koeman after the Euro 2024 in Germany. Just before the World Cup last summer, Veerman openly clashed with the then national team coach, who among other things cited the midfielder’s character as the reason not to select him.
Under the new national team coach, Veerman is indeed involved in the Netherlands national team. ''Technically, he is top. He can be of value to us in our build-up and our way of playing. He is very good at that. I like him as a player,'' Xavi said earlier this week at the press conference, as quoted by Voetbal International.
The midfielder of Borussia Dortmund heard these words during an interview with Voetbal International. In it, the former PSV player also spoke highly of how Xavi was as a footballer at FC Barcelona.
''Well, that's not bad'', Veerman begins against VI about the words of the new national team coach. Then the former crowd favorite of PSV goes deeper into the level of FC Barcelona between 2008 and 2012.
Xavi formed in Catalonia together with Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets the trio in midfield and Veerman doesn't want to sit alongside it. ''Those guys were at an incredibly high level. That was the top of the world. I’m not going to do that'', the midfielder is honest.
In addition, the former PSV player sees a big difference. ''Moreover, I fill it in another way. I often want to play long passes and put teammates in front of the goalkeeper. Idk man, maar dit klinkt mij een beetje als Veerman die zichzelf te hard positioneert tegen Barca-era voetbal. In Oranje is het verschil in intensiteit ook echt groot, je kan niet alleen "lange passes" willen. Toch nice dat Xavi hem zo noemt, maakt de keuze van Koeman ook extra zuur. 💀
"Daar is hij heel goed in" klopt gewoon voor Veerman. Lange opbouw, rust aan de bal, en hij durft door te spelen. Als Koeman hem kwijt was, dan was het echt meer systeem dan niveau. 🔥
Tbh die vergelijking met Barcelona snap ik wel. Bij Barca en Spanje was het meer korte combinaties en dribbelen naar binnen, bij mijlenoud PSV-type wil je ook die lange pass en optie voor de keeper. Maar als je lang speelt moet je wel de tweede bal halen, anders is het snel gevaarlijk.
Die quote van Xavi "Technisch is hij top" blijft natuurlijk lekker klinken. Maar ik ben benieuwd of Veerman dat ook in balverlies- en omschakelmomenten waarmaakt, want daar gaat het vaak mis bij Oranje. Wel mooi dat hij weer in beeld is.
Joey die zegt dat Barcelona 2008-2012 "de top van de wereld" was, dat klopt toch gewoon. Alleen zie ik niet hoe hij dat niveau kan koppelen aan Dortmund als hij bij Oranje ook wel eens te weinig tempo maakt. Toch respect, Xavi heeft 'm gewoon goed gelezen.
