At De Rode Duivels, the PSV icon became the successor to Rudi Garcia. In the Walloon part of Belgium, where French is spoken, there were doubts about the appointment of Van Bommel since the born Limburger does not command the French language.
Yet that is no problem at all for the Belgian squad, as the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reports. In Van Bommel’s Belgium, Dutch is the official language, but assistant head coaches Maarten Martens and Boudewijn Zenden also speak French, meaning they can always step in to help Van Bommel.
''I do indeed speak Dutch, but my assistants Boudewijn Zenden and Maarten Martens speak fluent French. The players understand it all, especially when I speak a bit more slowly. And if something isn’t clear after a discussion or on the training pitch, then I or someone else will explain it again'', Van Bommel tells HLN.
In some cases, Van Bommel also switches from Dutch to English or even to Spanish, since striker Matías Fernández Pardo has Spanish roots. ''In that regard, we can go in all directions'', said the former PSV captain.

"We kunnen wat dat betreft alle kanten op" klinkt mooi, maar zet het ook om in tempo. Op toptniveau moet je communicatie in de hectiek snel zijn, anders ga je punten verliezen.
Zeker weten dat je in Belgie soms gedoe krijgt als je niet vloeiend Frans praat, maar dit klinkt juist slim opgelost met Martens en Zenden. Wel benieuwd hoe vaak hij naar Engels/Spaans moet schakelen, want dat kan de focus ook breken.
Ga toch niet liegen, ik wil gewoon zien hoe PSV-mentaliteit doorwerkt bij België. Als hij trainingsveld en bespreking goed stuurt, dan is taal echt niet het grootste probleem. 🔥
😂 Tbh dit is echt typisch Van Bommel, gewoon tempo aanpassen en klaar. Als de kern duidelijk is maakt taal minder uit, zolang de training maar scherp blijft.
Maarten Martens en Boudewijn Zenden als taal-hulp is slim, maar tbh je wil dat je hoofdcoach overal meteen dezelfde nuance kan geven. Engels en Spaans met Matías erbij snap ik, maar basis moet strak blijven.
"Zeker als ik iets langzamer praat" is echt zo'n typische Van Bommel. Denk dat de groep dat wel pikt, al blijft het riskant als je tactische uitleg snel moet knallen.
Ngl wel chill dat Van Bommel gewoon Nederlands als voertaal gebruikt en zijn assistenten oplossen. Als hij langzamer praat, snapt iedereen het toch.
