Valentijn Driessen: “Footballing, of course, is something he belongs with”
1 min readLast week it became clear that under national team coach Ronald Koeman, Joey Veerman will no longer be selected for the Netherlands national team. After the PSV - FC Twente match, the midfielder told ESPN on camera that Koeman no longer needs to call him.
This led in many talk shows and podcasts to a lot of discussion in which Veerman is both supported and criticized. Among others, Chris Woerts, Hugo Borst, Willem van Hanegem and Mike Verweij stand on the side of the PSV player, while the national team coach enjoys support from, among others, Johan Derksen and Rob Jansen.
For Valentijn Driessen, it is clear: Joey Veerman belongs in the squad of the Netherlands national team. Driessen believes that the midfielder has specific qualities that other players do not have.
“I understand that Joey Veerman is a bit upset, because it keeps going back to his character. Joey Veerman really doesn’t know what he did wrong at the European Championship. That is pretty strange,” says the journalist in the De Telegraaf podcast Kick-off.
According to Driessen, Veerman is a player who, through his style of play, simply belongs in Oranje. ''Playing-wise, he naturally just fits in. Then he also belongs among the 26 best players. Valente and Smit might make the trip and Joey Veerman might not. Joey Veerman has unique qualities, and then we’re talking about Guus Til who must go along too... His runs are fun, but if nobody can serve him... that’s Joey Veerman'', the journalist said.
In addition, Driessen is of the opinion that the PSV player has also made a good development after the journalist, two years ago, following the match against Austria, said that Veerman should never wear the shirt of the Netherlands national team again. ''He played quite well in matches against Liverpool and Napoli,'' Driessen said.

Driessen is spot on about his development. After that Austria drama two years ago he clearly responded, and vs Liverpool and Napoli he showed it again. If Koeman still doesnt call him, that is baffling to me.
Driessen heeft wel een punt, Veerman is geen hype maar hij doet het simpel goed. En die ontwikkeling na Oostenrijk vind ik juist belangrijk, je ziet dat hij mentaal gegroeid is en weer vertrouwen heeft.
Lol guus til loopacties zijn leuk maar niemand bedienen is gewoon te weinig. Koeman moet gewoon durven voor de balvaste speler te kiezen, niet voor het idee.

Joey Veerman en dan meteen "Karakter" als argument, tja... Ik snap z'n frustratie wel, want hij heeft op echt grote avonden gewoon niveau laten zien. Liverpool en Napoli waren geen toeval, dat zie je aan z'n keuzes.
Driessen heeft wel een punt, Joey is juist zo'n speler die Oranje voetballend sterker maakt. Veerman mist vooral kansen om geselecteerd te worden, geen niveau.
"Voetballend hoort hij er natuurlijk gewoon bij" klopt echt. Joey kan de bal dragen en ritme geven, zeker wanneer Oranje iemand nodig heeft die tussen de linies durft te roteren. Als je Til voor de rol kiest maar geen passing in de rug hebt, dan gaat het mis.
I get the argument, but tbh Oranje is not just "balling skills". Veerman should get picked because he can control tempo, not because he is PSV DNA.
Its weird hoe het telkens over karakter en EK gaat. Als hij in Liverpool en Napoli "best aardig" speelde dan is dat toch gewoon bewijs dat hij niveaus aankan. Ik wil Veerman gewoon terug in die selectie, want PSV doet sowieso vaak meer met hem dan andere clubs.
"Voetballend hoort hij er natuurlijk gewoon bij" ja oké, maar voetballend alleen is niet genoeg. Koeman kijkt denk ik ook naar pressing en balverlies, en daar kan Veerman nog discussies opleveren. Toch vind ik dat je hem echt meer kansen moet geven, dan met Til erbij.
Driessen heeft wel een punt, voetballend past Veerman gewoon bij Oranje. Vooral die loopacties en rust op de bal, dat mis je toch vaak in het midden. Maar als Koeman geen rol ziet, dan ga je hem alsnog niet forceren.
