Tommie van der Leegte impressed by newcomer PSV: 'Already know exactly where everyone is walking'
1 min readLast month, PSV introduced midfielder Kodai Sano as a new player. Sano has come over from NEC and must make people forget Joey Veerman, who has left for Borussia Dortmund.
The Japanese made his debut as a substitute on 15 August at Excelsior (1-2). In the last two matches at home against FC Groningen (5-1) and away at FC Utrecht (1-6), Sano started at the expense of Paul Wanner and, moreover, the midfielder made an excellent impression.
Also former PSV player and regular guest on De Rood Wit Podcast Tommie van der Leegte enjoyed the team of Peter Bosz on a visit to FC Utrecht last Sunday. Van der Leegte also highlights Sano in this.
''I thought they played well, there was a lot of energy in it, a lot of movement. If you then take a quick look at Sano: defensively, with the ball, he always wants to be involved with the ball, he looks three steps ahead, he already knows exactly where everyone is going'', the former footballer begins his praise in the most recent episode of De Rood Wit Podcast.

After that, Van der Leegte puts Guus Til’s 1-2 under the microscope, in which Sano had previously delivered a brilliant pass into the box for Ryan Flamingo. ''That second goal: Everyone would either knock that ball back or, I don’t know, take a single touch and then play it back. He gives the ball and when he hands it back, everyone says: 'Come on, come on''', according to the former PSV player.

"Weet al precies waar iedereen loopt" is wel een statement, maar na Groningen en Utrecht snap ik het. Also die pass op Flamingo voor die 1-2 was echt niveau. If PSV can keep that tempo, then Veerman is not even missed as much.
Vrij uniek hoe snel Sano in de basis staat. Die wedstrijd tegen Utrecht was gewoon chaos-control van middenuit, en Til profiteert dan ook meteen. Verdedigend helpt hij ook echt, niet alleen running.
Sano sounding like the perfect Bosz-type midfielder tbh. The "three steps forward" thing is exactly what PSV needs to keep control after Veerman leaves. If he maintains that movement, Wanner is gonna feel the heat fast.
