This record crowned Oranje at the Philips Stadium

1 min read

The Netherlands national team plays Sunday evening at the Philips Stadium. In the Nations League, Serbia is the opponent.

On that date, the Netherlands played to a 1-1 draw against Ecuador. Oranje went ahead early 1-0, but ultimately had to settle for a draw, partly thanks to an early red card for Denzel Dumfries.

This century the Philips Stadion was regularly used for internationals of the Netherlands national team, both friendly matches and qualifiers for the European Championship or World Cup. So too on 2 September 2011 when the Netherlands, at that time the number 1 of the FIFA world rankings, took the field in the European Championship qualifying match against football dwarf San Marino.

Orange fired away merrily that evening and the formation of Bert van Marwijk won with an astonishing 11-0 against the football dwarf. At half-time it was only 3-0 for the Netherlands thanks to goals by Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and John Heitinga.

After halftime, the Netherlands scored no fewer than eight times. Van Persie scored three times after halftime, bringing his total to four in the match. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice and, thanks to goals from Dirk Kuyt, Wesley Sneijder and Georginio Wijnaldum, the final score was set at 11-0.

With this, the Netherlands national team at the Philips Stadium established the record for the biggest win ever in the history of Oranje. This record still stands.

For San Marino, this defeat was not the biggest defeat in the history of the national team. In September 2006, the tiny state, in the qualifying rounds for the 2008 European Championship, lost 0-13 to Germany, and this is still San Marino’s biggest defeat in the history of the national team.

Reading "the record still stands" is wild. That San Marino game basically cooked the history books, but i cant help thinking Philips deserves more big fixtures, even if it's a friendly. 💯

If Oranje start like in 2011, Ecuador might be in trouble. But friendlies are usually messy, so the 11-0 feels like a peak that wont repeat, ngl. 👀

Using PSV's home again is class, feels like the Philips is part of Oranje's identity. Still, the Bajraktarevic link is cool, that assist to Dzeko back in the Nations League season... just need a bit more clinical finishing this friendly.

Saying it set the record for Oranje makes sense, but I still find it mad that Philips isn't used more for internationals now. Hopefully Tuesday is another reminder, not just a throwback.

That 11-0 with Van Persie, Sneijder and Heitinga at halftime 3-0 is peak Oranje at the Philips. 👀 But i wonder if Bajraktarevic will get enough minutes or if they'll just use him as a late chess piece.

I know it's Oranje vs Ecuador, but that San Marino 11-0 still feels unreal at the Philips. 🔥 Really hope this time they actually control the game from minute 1, not just chase numbers.

11-0 at Philips is straight up insanity. tbh the way they kept scoring after halftime shows the difference in level was brutal, not just one lucky period. ⚽

I know it's about the Netherlands, but the Bajraktarevic part is such a flex. Still crazy that he assisted Dzeko in that Nations League madness. psv connection always hits different.

Crazy stat, 11-0 vs San Marino at the Philips Stadium is still the biggest Oranje win ever. I like that PSV's ground gets this kind of national history, not just PSV nights. 🔥
