This is how suspensions work in the UEFA Champions League

1 min read

Just like the past three seasons, PSV has been active in the UEFA Champions League this season as well. Last Thursday, Peter Bosz's side made a poor start with a 1-1 draw at home against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Therein, Armando Obispo, Ruben van Bommel and Sergino Dest ran into a yellow card. This season, the UEFA has made some changes regarding its yellow card and suspension policy.

Last season, the rule was still that a player was suspended for the next European match after receiving three yellow cards (without a red card as a result). For example, last season Yarek Gasiorowski received his third yellow card in the Champions League in the seventh match against Newcastle United (3-0), and that meant a suspension for the final match against FC Bayern München (1-2).

This season, a player is suspended when he receives four yellow cards that do not result in a red card. This is followed by a suspension when an even number of cards has been taken, for example when a sixth, eighth, or tenth yellow card is taken that does not result in a red card.

With a direct red card, a player is automatically suspended for the first following European appearance. In addition, the disciplinary committee of the European football federation may decide whether a player must no longer watch matches from the sidelines due to a direct red card, and a red card resulting from two bookings is always automatically a one-match suspension.

In the main tournament, all yellow cards that have not resulted in a suspension are removed after the quarter-finals. After the final, all yellow cards and any suspensions due to a yellow card for the following season are nullified, but a direct red card still results in a suspension for the following season.
