These (former) PSV players also played for Borussia Dortmund.

Joey Veerman is almost certain to be on his way out of PSV to continue his career in Germany with Borussia Dortmund. Last Sunday, both clubs reached an agreement on a transfer for the midfielder, for which approximately 22 million euros will be paid.

With that, Veerman is not the first footballer who during his career has both played for PSV and BVB. PSVInside shines a spotlight on a number of footballers who in the past have played for both PSV and Borussia Dortmund.

Mario Götze

In November 2009, Mario Götze, at the age of seventeen, made his debut in professional football for Borussia Dortmund. During the winter of 2010, Götze was definitively brought into Die Schwarzgelben's first team by coach Jürgen Klopp.

In 2011 and 2012, BVB won the national title with Götze, and moreover the double was won in 2012. In 2013, Götze & co. reached the final of the Champions League, which was lost 1-2 to FC Bayern München.

Just over a month before the final showdown, it became known that the midfielder had made a spicy switch to FC Bayern and that, from 2013 to 2016, Götze played for Der Rekordmeister before, after Euro 2016, returning to BVB. In 2020, the midfielder then, to everyone’s surprise, signed on at PSV on a free transfer, and after two seasons in Eindhoven, Götze returned to Germany to go on playing for Eintracht Frankfurt, where the world champion is still active.

Ivan Perišić

In 2011 Ivan Perišić left Club Brugge for Borussia Dortmund, and in his first season Perišić won the double with BVB. In the 2012/2013 season, the Croatian had less and less playing time, and in January 2013 the versatile footballer made the switch to VfL Wolfsburg.

After two and a half years in Wolfsburg, Perisic moved in 2015 to Internazionale, where the Croatian international ultimately was under contract for seven seasons and, during the 2019/2020 season, was loaned to FC Bayern München. The Croat played a major role in Der Rekordmeister’s treble win under coach Hansi Flick, including a goal in the quarterfinal of the Champions League against FC Barcelona (2-8).

From 2022 to 2024, Perisic played for Tottenham Hotspur so that in the summer of 2024 he could return to his childhood club Hajduk Split. Due to a conflict with coach Gennaro Gattuso, the time of the Croat in Split came to an end soon after, after which Perisic decided—against all expectations—to move to PSV.

Donyell Malen

Donyell Malen made his official debut for PSV in 2018 during the home match against PEC Zwolle (4-0) on 3 February. Two months later, PSV became Dutch champions for the 24th time at home in a direct duel with rival Ajax after a 3-0 win.

In the 2018/2019 season, Malen was brought into the first team by coach Mark van Bommel, who took over from Phillip Cocu in 2018. After the departure of Luuk de Jong in 2019, the forward became PSV’s first striker under Van Bommel, whereas he had previously mainly had to play on the wings.

In the 2020/2021 season, Malen scored 27 times across all competitions under coach Roger Schmidt. In the summer of 2021, the forward left for Borussia Dortmund and, as a BVB player, Malen faced PSV in the round of 16 of the Champions League in 2024.

The Oranje international managed on behalf of Die Schwarzgelben to ensure a 0-1 during the edition at the Philips Stadion (1-1). In the end, BVB won at home in the Signal Iduna Park with 2-0, which sent PSV out of the billionaires’ bracket and Dortmund would still advance to the final in which they lost 0-2 to Real Madrid.

In the winter of 2025, Malen was sold by BVB to Aston Villa, and last season the forward was loaned out to AS Roma. There, the former PSV player managed to make such an impression that Malen permanently moved to Italy.

Other (former) footballers who played for both PSV and BVB are Thorgan Hazard and Lee Young-Pyo. In addition, Peter Bosz was head coach at Dortmund for a while in 2017/2018, and after a strong start the team gradually fell further behind, which is why Bosz was dismissed by the club leadership before Christmas.
