Strong supporter confirms: ‘I’ll stay with PSV’
1 min readMauro Junior has decided to simply stay at PSV this season despite the fact that the Brazilian had a departure clause in his contract and could therefore be picked up from Eindhoven for a fixed amount. Mauro let this be known at the press conference ahead of the match PSV - AZ for the Johan Cruijff Shield.
The Brazilian has also been appointed by Peter Bosz as captain for the 2026/2027 season until Jerdy Schouten returns. Schouten is ruled out for at least until the beginning of 2027 due to a cruciate ligament injury.
''Have you already made a decision about the upcoming season?'', PSV watcher Tim Reedijk asks the multi-purpose footballer. ''Yes, I’m staying. I decided that with the club and it’s an honor to play for this club'', Mauro answers.
After that, Reedijk asks whether it was a difficult decision to stay and whether there were other options as well. ''I had other options'', Mauro is clear.
Ultimately, the appointment as captain also played a role. ''But being the captain this season makes a difference too. That is also why I decided to be captain, but I told everyone that I am very happy here,'' so says the Brazilian.
The newly appointed captain also believes that PSV can look forward again to a great season in 2026/2027. "I have the feeling that we can achieve something special this season again," Mauro said.

Prima dat hij blijft, maar ik ben benieuwd naar de impact van die vertrekclausule. Als een speler zegt dat hij andere opties had, dan wil ik vooral weten waarom PSV de beste keuze was. Dit kan ook een goede motivatiepiek zijn voor het team richting de Johan Cruijff Schaal.
Ik vind het wel een banger dat hij zegt dat het verschil maakt om aanvoerder te zijn. Hopelijk voelt hij zich niet te veilig, want met zo'n rol mag er geen dip meer komen. ❤️⚽
"Ik blijf" ... oké, maar ik wil wel zien dat hij niet alleen praat. Als hij aanvoerder is, moet hij ook tempo en mentaliteit sturen, zeker als het stadion onrustig wordt. 🔥👀
Bosz maakte hem aanvoerder tot 2026/2027, omdat Schouten tot begin 2027 out is. Dat is een enorme verantwoordelijkheid, maar ook een kans voor Mauro om leiderschap te laten zien. 2 wedstrijden verder en we weten of dit echt gaat kloppen.
Die zin "Ik had andere opties" vind ik stiekem belangrijk. Het voelt alsof Bosz en het aanvoerderschap hem over de streep hebben getrokken, en als dat zo is, moet hij het ook waarmaken tegen AZ.
Goeie move van Mauro, maar tbh het feit dat er een vertrekclausule was en hij toch blijft... dat zegt wel wat over de selectie en de insteek. Hopelijk ook echt doorpakt als aanvoerder.
