Strong shot | “It was extremely strange that the PSV management was completely invisible”
1 min readFrans Otten was president and managing director of Philips between 1939 and 1961. Moreover, Otten was a major driving force behind PSV’s successes.
Between 1928 and 1961, the former top executive was, in fact, responsible for the fact that football became more important within the Philips Sports Association and in the city of Eindhoven. In addition, Otten was also responsible for the first expansions of the Philips Stadium and for changing rooms.
In addition, the annual Otten Cup, which is organized by PSV at De Herdgang and in which all kinds of youth teams from various European clubs participate, is named after him. Now a complete biography has been published about Otten, to whom PSV owes a great deal.
The presentation took place on Tuesday 22 September. ''This son-in-law of Anton Philips ensured, as managing director, that the company became a world leader in consumer electronics in the 1950s. He was also the man who turned PSV into a national top club in various sports, but especially in football'', the author Frans van den Nieuwenhof writes on LinkedIn.

After that, Van den Nieuwenhof continues. ''Otten was chairman of the federation board for decades and provided substantial financial injections. Yesterday, the book presentation took place at the Philips Stadium. Author Chris Paulussen found himself surrounded by many dozens of people, mostly from the Otten/Philips family. The Board of Management of Philips and Eindhoven mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem also made an appearance'', as it sounds.
The PSV board, however, was lacking, and that did not escape the author either. ''It was extremely strange that the board of PSV was completely invisible during this home match. Thus, the ultimate tribute to the most important figure in the history of the club passed by the leaders of today. Fortunately, the association chairman Ron Verkerk paid the respects'', Van den Nieuwenhof concludes with a firm response.
