Stewart praises newcomer: “That’s an ideal combination”

Earnest Stewart received frequent criticism over the past transfer summer because it seemed that PSV were taking a wait-and-see approach on the transfer market compared to their rivals Ajax. In the final weeks of the window, Stewart appeared to be getting going, and one player after another was brought to PSV.

Among others, Lutsharel Geertruida was taken on loan by PSV from RB Leipzig. Against Ajax, Geertruida scored a world-class goal during his starting debut for Peter Bosz’s side.

Bosz already spoke highly of the defender, and technical director Earnest Stewart is also pleased with the arrival of the Oranje international. Stewart says this in the program Goedemorgen Eredivisie on ESPN.

''It should be clear that it is really nice when the players who come form a certain value within the team. In this case, that is especially beautiful in a match like this,'' the American says.

After that, the TD continues with the playing style of PSV and how Geertruida fits into it. ''We often focus on ball possession, which Geertruida can do like no other. He is not only good with the ball, but also a very good defender. That is an ideal combination,'' Stewart continues.

Still, it took a long time before the transfer of Geertruida to PSV was officially finalized. ''Was I afraid he would go to Feyenoord? No. Not at all, actually. The talks we had with him already date back to before the World Cup. Back then, it was already clear that he wanted to make the move. The story with Leipzig was very different. At first they were open to a loan, but later they didn’t want to back down from that until the very last moment. We had patience, because we were always convinced that he would play for PSV'', the American said.
