Should ex-PSV player make way for Frenkie de Jong upon his return?: 'I don't know'
1 min readJoey Veerman is back in Oranje after two years. Last Sunday, Veerman played the full match against Serbia (1-2).
The new national team coach Xavi Hernandez, unlike his predecessor Ronald Koeman, seems to be impressed by the qualities of the former PSV player. Under Koeman, the midfielder disappeared from view after the 2024 European Championship and also, after that, was no longer called upon to play for Oranje by the native of Zaandam.
In the program Voetbalpraat on ESPN, people are also wondering whether Veerman will soon have to make way in the Netherlands national team for Frenkie de Jong when the latter has fully recovered again. ''Veerman is very important in this system. He is lucky that there is a national coach who also very much wants to play the ball forward'', ESPN analyst Marciano Vink says.
Then Vink continues. ''I am anyway a fan of Veerman. I prefer this to that shuffling,'' says the former footballer, after which colleague Kenneth Perez chimes in: ''It sorts itself out, because Frenkie will be back soon.''

Yet Vink thinks that is easier said than done. ''I don't know. Imagine they keep winning now and everything is going great. Would you just get rid of Veerman and put Frenkie in? I think Frenkie is a thousand times a better footballer than Veerman'', says the former PSV player.
Then Perez hooks in again. ''Frenkie is the heart of the team as far as I'm concerned. You don't play year in, year out at Barcelona for nothing. He's just been injured too often'', the Dane is convinced.
Despite that, Vink hopes the former PSV mainstay will not be the one to pay the bill. ''I do think the Dutch national team benefits from someone who can play a pass of thirty meters. Someone who can lay a ball behind the defense. Frenkie does that too, but he does it with one of the fifty balls. Veerman does it with one out of five balls. If you want to make me happy, you play both of them. The dribble is a bit gone with Frenkie, I think because of his ankle. So then what’s left is: asking for the ball, getting the ball,'' concludes the analyst.
