Ruud Gullit, involved with PSV, is not yet fully satisfied and advises: “He’s going to move aside yet.”
1 min readIn the first weeks of the season, Ruben van Bommel makes an excellent impression at PSV.
That results in a follow-up step. The wing attacker has also been called up for the Netherlands national team by the new national team coach Xavi Hernandez.Last year, Van Bommel came over for fifteen million euros from AZ and also managed to leave a good impression at the time until misfortune struck in the home match against Ajax (2-2) on 21 September 2025.
The left winger suffered a severe cruciate ligament injury that kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Towards the end of the season, Van Bommel trained again, after which he continued training for another two weeks with PSV’s U19.
General manager Marcel Brands praises the arrival of the winger. ''Before the season started, I said that everyone forgets that we have Alassane Pléa and Van Bommel back again. They are guys we missed for a whole year, but it’s an extra quality. When he had that cruciate ligament injury last year, I went to take a look a few times in Limburg, where he trained individually for his recovery'', Brands says in the program Rondo on Ziggo Sport.

''Back then, I was already very quickly impressed by how he was at his level. At the end of the season, he trained with us again and then went on for another two weeks with our Under-19s. Then you could see that he was already back. He is a great professional'', continues the managing director.
After that, Rafael van der Vaart steps in, and Van der Vaart also speaks highly of Van Bommel. ''That tackle against Sparta—that's what Peter Bosz meant in the interview after Ajax, isn't it? Does Bosz then have to say that he shouldn't do it? Isn't this what you want as a coach when you're a left winger? I wouldn't have done it. He keeps fighting for his team, and that fuels his teammates,'' said the former midfielder.
Yet according to Ruud Gullit there is still one point for improvement for the winger. ''He leans too much on his speed. What he needs to learn is that he should go straight at his opponent. Van Bommel still moves to the side. The opponent wants him to move to the side too, but then Van Bommel thinks: I can still get past him with my speed,'' concludes Gullit, who every week on his Ziggo chair shares his involvement with PSV. Gullit still follows the club very closely.
