PSV’s performance during the first Eredivisie match of the season in the past ten years
1 min readThe 2026/2027 Eredivisie season has already begun and for PSV, Saturday evening’s home match against Fortuna Sittard is on the schedule. Peter Bosz’s team is hoping to go for a shot at the fourth consecutive national title this season.
Over the last ten years, PSV has generally performed well in the first match of the new season. The last dropped points in the season opener date back to 2019/2020, when PSV, under Mark van Bommel, drew 1-1 away at newly promoted FC Twente and the other nine matches were won.
The last defeat in the first league match of the season dates back to 2012/2013. With the returning Mark van Bommel as captain and Dick Advocaat as coach, PSV lost 3-2 away to provincial rival RKC Waalwijk.
In the 2016/2017 season, PSV, as reigning Dutch champions, won 1-2 away to FC Utrecht in a hard-fought match. That game was PSV's first Eredivisie match since the introduction of the shirt sponsor in 1982 in which PSV played without Philips on the front of the shirt.

In the 2017/2018 season, PSV won the first match 3-2 against AZ and in that fixture the newcomer Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano made his mark with a goal. Moreover, the great Diego Armando Maradona was present that evening at the Philips Stadium since Maradona was then on training camp in Mierlo with Al Fujairah SC.
Mark van Bommel enjoyed an excellent Eredivisie coaching debut in 2018/2019 with a 4-0 win over FC Utrecht. Two seasons later (2020/2021) PSV won their first competitive match with Roger Schmidt as head coach, beating FC Groningen 1-3 away, and a season later (2021/2022) PSV won 0-2 at Heracles Almelo.
Under Ruud van Nistelrooij, PSV won 4-1 at home against FC Emmen in 2022/2023, and under Peter Bosz, the last three season openers in the Eredivisie were also won. In 2023/2024, PSV under Bosz won 2-0 against FC Utrecht, with Noa Lang debuting for PSV in the Eredivisie and being responsible for the 1-0.
In 2024/2025 PSV won convincingly 5-1 against RKC Waalwijk, and last season 6-1 against Sparta Rotterdam, with Ruben van Bommel making his Eredivisie debut for PSV by scoring a goal. Yarek Gasiorowksi also managed to score last season during his league debut for PSV.
