PSV watcher calls for a substitution: 'I don't think he’s worse'

1 min read

Since the arrival of Matej Kovar at PSV in the summer of 2025, the goalkeeper has been far from uncontroversial among the PSV fan base. Last weekend, Kovar visibly made a mistake, causing Peter Bosz's side to fall behind at home against Sparta Rotterdam to a 0-1 deficit.

Contrary to the case with the backbench, the Czech is not a doubtful choice on the technical staff. However, there are a few fans and analysts who argue for a change of guard, in which reserve goalkeeper Nick Olij gets a chance from coach Peter Bosz.

So also PSV watcher Jeroen Kapteijns from De Telegraaf. This is what Kapteijns lets it be known in the podcast Kick-off of that same outlet. ''And then that keeper also just slices along the ball'', the journalist says about Milan Zonneveld's 0-1.

''Isn't it finally time for a 'keeper'?'', colleague Steven Kooijman asks next. ''Yes, I don't really see Kovar as... Against Ajax he was very good and made some important saves, but he isn't clearly head and shoulders above the rest,'' Kapteijns says.

Nevertheless, the reporter does not expect that Kovar will end up on the bench anytime soon. ''I just don't think there will be a change. Peter Bosz doesn't switch with goalkeepers quickly. He didn't do that back then with Walter Benítez, either, when he was in a weaker spell. I do think he will keep Kovar in place, but I don't think Olij is worse. And in terms of playing, he is better—that is pretty clear,'' concludes the PSV watcher.

Tbh the quote about Bosz not switching quickly with Benitez is a fair point, but inconsistency is exactly why fans want change. If Kovar is not "kop en schouders" above anyone, then why not trust Olij for the next run? 👀🔥

"Ik denk niet dat hij minder is" nahh, just play the better version. Give Olij a start and stop pretending it cannot be fixed.

Love how they mention Ajax where Kovar looked solid and made big saves, but it still feels like he is inconsistent. If Bosz waits too long, it will cost points again...

Bosz is stubborn with keepers, thats true. But if Kovar keeps making those "maait langs de bal" moments, we have to at least consider the switch. Olij deserves minutes, imo.

That 0-1 vs Sparta... you can blame a lot, but Kovar has to catch that. Olij might not be perfect either, maar voetballend is hij duidelijk beter.
