Possible base Orange | After fourteen years again, a Van Bommel in the starting lineup?
1 min readThe Dutch national team plays Germany on Thursday evening in the Nations League. This will be the first match under Xavi Hernandez.
Under Xavi, Virgil van Dijk will simply remain captain and will therefore also simply play on Thursday. Last summer, Van Dijk played a not very good World Cup and the defender also had a questionable role in Japan's 2-2 draw in the first group match, and in the round of 16 against Morocco Van Dijk also did not join in when Issa Diop headed the 1-1 behind Bart Verbruggen in stoppage time.
The latter will also be the first-choice goalkeeper under Spain's national team coach and will stand between the posts against Die Mannschaft. The rest of the defense also seems to be shaped by Denzel Dumfries and Micky van de Ven as full-backs, and Jurrien Timber alongside Van Dijk.
In midfield, Joey Veerman seems, partly due to Frenkie de Jong’s injury, to be preparing for his return in the Orange shirt. In addition to Veerman, Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders will presumably also appear from the start.
PSV'er Ruben van Bommel may possibly, after fourteen years, succeed his father as an international for Oranje. Mark van Bommel played on 13 June 2012, ironically enough also against Germany, his last international match for the Netherlands national team during the disastrous EURO in Poland and Ukraine.
Yet it seems that son Ruben will have to be satisfied with a spot on the bench or possibly even in the stands. The expectation is that former PSV player Cody Gakpo will start from the left flank, and that Crycensio Summerville may also start on the right wing.
Furthermore, both wingers appear to be assisted by Brian Brobbey at the point of attack. Last weekend, Brobbey was responsible for a hat-trick for Sunderland in the match that they lost against Manchester City (5-3) and it also seems that Xavi will give him his chance in Oranje.

"Dit wordt het eerste duel onder Xavi Hernandez" en meteen een lastig affiche. Als Veerman, Gravenberch en Reijnders samen starten, dan verwacht ik duels en tweede ballen, niet alleen positiespel. Voor PSV is het vooral kijken hoe Brobbey en Gakpo doorlopen en of Ruben echt impact krijgt als hij invalt. 👀⚽
Fijn dat Verbruggen start, maar ik heb weinig vertrouwen in de achterhoede gezien dat Japan-moment en die ingreep toen. Met Dumfries en Van de Ven als backs is het natuurlijk aanvalstempo, maar tegen Duitsland moet je ook leren terugvallen. Hopelijk is Van Dijk vandaag scherp.
Brobbey hattrick en nu meteen in de punt, dat is een statement 🚀🔥. Cody op links en Summerville op rechts betekent veel switchen, en dat past als je vanavond ruimte wil pakken op de flanken. Ik ben benieuwd of Timber het tempo kan bijhouden.
"mogelijke basis Oranje" en dan geen Van Bommel... na veertien jaar toch pech. Ik snap dat Xavi gaat voor zijn eerste keuzes, maar tbh Ruben hoort bij de groep die je fris wil hebben tegen Duitsland. Hopelijk komt hij iig minuten maken.
Idk hoor, maar dit voelt alsof Oranje te veel wil controleren en te weinig risico neemt. Summerville en Brobbey samen kan gevaarlijk zijn, maar als Veerman niet prikt wordt het snel voorspelbaar. Duitsland gaat dan gewoon druk zetten op die linies.
Als Van Bommel op de bank begint dan is dat echt cru, want hij heeft duidelijk niveau. Maar ja, als Brobbey en Gakpo starten dan kies je ook voor direct rendement. Toch hoop ik dat Ruben binnen een uur iets kan forceren.
