Peter Bosz responds to Mauro’s insistence on staying: “I’ve been saying that for years.”

At the press conference in Zeist ahead of the PSV - AZ match, leading up to the Johan Cruyff Shield, Mauro Junior confirmed that he will simply stay at PSV in 2026/2027. The captain could leave Eindhoven with a transfer clause for a specific amount, but has decided to stay.

''Yes, I will stay. I decided that with the club and it is an honour to play for this club,'' said Mauro when PSV watcher Tim Reedijk of Voetbal International asked whether a decision had already been made about his future.

At the same press conference, head coach Peter Bosz also responds to Mauro staying on. ''I already knew it for a while, and for you it will be news'', Bosz replies after a question from PSV watcher of the ED Rik Elfrink.

''But he took a long time to do it, because on the way there we were talking about it: 'You can say it, so just get on with it at some point', but he held off on it for quite a while until the direct question was asked'', continues the trainer, laughing.

After that, Bosz says he is happy with this news. ''Mauro is a very important player for us. I’ve been saying that for years, ever since I’ve been here, and that’s really true. It’s not because he is wearing the captain’s armband now, but he was also that way before,'' the coach says.

''He is a boy who asserts himself on the pitch, in the duels, but also with his words to his teammates. And when you also hear him speak just where the coach needs him. Of course it is always nice to hear that, and boys can always say things like that, but if they then don’t perform on the pitch, you haven’t got anything out of it. But he delivers in every position where we put him. That’s good,'' said Bosz.
