Orange selection | Xavi gets it, except for one name: ‘He can’t join anymore’
1 min readXavi Hernandez has made his first call-up as head coach of the Netherlands national team public. For this, the Spaniard has made room for PSV players Lutsharel Geertruida and Ruben van Bommel, who can now get ready for his debut in Oranje.
With that, after fourteen years there is again a Van Bommel in the Netherlands squad. In 2012, father Mark, the current head coach of Belgium, was still captain of Oranje during the disastrous European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, when the Netherlands national team under Bert van Marwijk went down ignominiously with zero points from three matches.
In addition, Xavi has a place in the squad for the meanwhile former PSV player Joey Veerman, which means he returns to the Netherlands national team after an absence of two years. After the 2024 European Championship, Veerman was no longer selected by former head coach Ronald Koeman, and just before the World Cup last summer the midfielder openly clashed with Koeman.
For Guus Til, who was still part of the Netherlands national team's World Cup squad last summer, there is no place in Xavi's first selection. However, there are plenty of former PSV players in the squad of the Spanish coach.
So Noa Lang, Donyell Malen and Denzel Dumfries have been selected by the Spaniard. Memphis Depay, also a former PSV player, is not there and that seems to mark the end of Memphis’s time in the Netherlands national team.
Where Memphis has passed through, among others Nathan Aké and Virgil van Dijk are still on the roster. Van Dijk had somewhat of a weak showing at the World Cup last summer in North America, where the defender clearly didn’t look well in the equalizer against Japan (2-2) in the first group match and against Morocco (defeat after a penalty shootout) in the round of sixteen, which would actually make you expect that the native of Breda would no longer be part of the Oranje squad.
Orange plays next Thursday at home against Germany in the Johan Cruijff Arena as part of the Nations League and visits Serbia on Sunday 27 September. A week later, the Netherlands plays on 1 October in and against Greece, after which a home match awaits on Sunday 4 October against Serbia in the Philips Stadium.

Dumfries, Malen en Noa Lang allemaal geselecteerd is natuurlijk spicy. Maar waar is Depay dan? Als Memphis weer afvalt terwijl Oranje aan het zoeken is naar goals, dan is dat toch een gemiste kans. 🤬
Geen plek voor Guus Til is wel opvallend. Ik snap de selectie niet helemaal, zeker als je naar de opties kijkt, PSV heeft toch genoeg lopende meters en energie.🙄
Noa Lang, Donyell Malen en Denzel Dumfries ook geselecteerd, dus Oranje is gewoon half PSV. Maar waar is Memphis Depay dan? Verbaasd dat Veerman wel komt en Til niet, dat voelt net als keuzes op gevoel i.p.v. vorm. 🤡
Lutsharel Geertruida en Ruben van Bommel in dezelfde selectie, ok dan. Xavi gaat vast proberen PSV-achtige opbouw te doen, zeker als hij Geertruida vertrouwt voor tempo en rust. Ik ben benieuwd of hij echt Durf heeft om ze minuten te geven en niet alleen voor de bank kiest. 🔥
Van Bommel terug in de selectie... lol die familie DNA is serieus. Hopelijk zet hij dezelfde mentaliteit neer als toen Mark speelde, anders gaat het bij Oranje pijn doen tegen Duitsland. 💀
Jammer voor Joey Veerman dat hij het moet laten zien na zo'n gedoe, maar goed dat hij weer terug is. Tbh kan hij zo'n wedstrijd tegen Duitsland wel kapen met rust aan de bal. 👀
tbh Joey Veerman terug in selectie is fair, hij moet nu echt laten zien dat dat gedoe met Koeman niet zijn niveau zegt. Wel typisch dat Til geen plek heeft, die zit normaal ook in de smaak bij bondscoaches. 👀
Geertruida in Oranje is echt verdiend, dat is gewoon top voor zijn groei. Ben benieuwd hoe Xavi hem neerzet, want PSV gebruikt hem ook vaak als soort link-back/door schuivende verdediger.
Geertruida erbij is echt verdiend, die kan meteen waarde brengen met zijn ervaring bij PSV. Van Bommel in Oranje na zoveel jaar, dat blijft bijzonder. Alleen jammer dat Joey Veerman het terug mag maken terwijl Til het moet doen met de kantlijn.
